Of course, when we talk about great male jazz singers, most of us think of the classic names: Billy Eckstine, Ray Charles, Joe Williams, Jon Hendricks, Mel Torme, Tony Bennett, Johnny Hartman and many would add Frank Sinatra, who could swing better than most, if he wanted. So what a coincidence that all these names can be found in our extensive jazz catalog!

This early-'60s effort, not Murphy's first but still pretty early in his discographical canon, has worn well over the years. Credit of course can be lavished on the vocalist himself, who didn't sound like this 20 years later, although every stage of his developing vocal chops has been interesting to be sure. On tracks such as "Green Dolphin Street," he dives into the rhythm with the relaxed calm of an expert. And when the result can be the harebrained complexity of "Twisted" or the funky timing of "Doodlin'," the wisdom of letting the experts handle the hard work has never been more apparent. But this is not just Murphy's display.

Mark Murphy is blessed with a magical ability to reinvent and repackage himself. From brash, young hipster to brazen pathfinder to sage elder statesman, he has managed to hold our rapt attention through each incarnation. No wonder, then, that he has outplayed and outlasted almost all of his peers, and is, at age 69, still at the top of his game.

This is an unusual recording. Singer Mark Murphy teams up with a fine sextet (featuring altoist Richie Cole and guitarist Bruce Forman) and alternating bop standards with readings from Jack Kerouac books. Since Kerouac was a big jazz fan in the 1950s and his interest in the music influenced the rhythms of his writing, this "poetry and jazz" set works surprisingly well. It also helps that Mark Murphy is heard at the peak of his powers.

Mark Murphy was the finest, hippest male jazz singer I ever heard. And I heard him a lot. Okay don’t take my word for it. Dusty Springfield, Scott Walker, Peggy Lee, Betty Carter, Sammy Davis Jr and Matt Monro can also be listed among his close admirers, while Ella Fitzgerald was moved to declare: “He is my equal”. The recipient of the 1996, 1997, 2000, and 2001 Down Beat magazine readers jazz poll for Best Male Vocalist of the Year, the six-time Grammy nominee was also popular with the British record-buying public, and in the world section of the annual Melody Maker poll, Mark was voted runner-up to Sinatra in 1965 and 1966. Enjoy this superb compilation including Milestones, My Favourite Things and Why Don't You Do Right?

Jazz was moved in alongside Latin rhythms way back when. Even in New Orleans, at its time of birth, jazz was swaying its hips to a Latin beat. Here, on this expansive three-disc set, is arrayed an amazing range of sounds that have shaped not only jazz music but also our lives in recent times. Enjoy these sounds from the likes of Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Luiz Boná and Candido.

Gilles Peterson Presents another killer compilation, strickly MPS. Gilles Peterson has a special love affair with MPS. Naturally, there was a long list of amazing interpretations of jazz classics from acknowledged jazz masters, but early on Gilles had developed the talent to dig deeper into the depths of the archives in order to ferret out the special features of the catalogue - occasionally discovering a obscurity - and bring them to the light of day.
