With the first recording of Georg Anton Kreusser’s Passion oratorio “The Death of Jesus”, the Mainz Cathedral Choir of St Martin and the Mainz Cathedral Orchestra are reviving a lost musical treasure. Today, the sacred cantata is the only surviving witness to the rich oratorio culture of the city of Mainz’s flourishing musical life in the late 18th century. The Passion is based on the sentimental text by the Protestant poet Karl Wilhelm Ramler, which achieved some fame through Carl Heinrich Graun’s earlier setting. Graun’s oratorio was also performed in Mainz, along with only a few other Catholic courts. Unlike Graun, Kreusser’s setting of the “Death of Jesus” is deliberately orientated towards a rather operatic musical language and secular performance spaces.

The music on the CD is as colorful as the lettering on the cover. With this in-house production, Hans-Günther Kölz on the keys and Wolfgang Russ, bass and guitar, fulfilled a long-cherished wish. Among them is Matthias Anton, who impresses with an extremely versatile saxophone playing that is experienced in all styles, and Achim Schweikert as a solid and sensitive drummer.

The fifth AXIS recording once again brings in a different approach to the music. With the exception of the group’s first album, Les Oiseaux De Matisse, which was largely recorded live in the studio, subsequent albums (Dream Feathers, Port Of Saints, Blutopia) have been built from Ron upwards – Ron recording with a small core of players and then arranged for larger groups via subsequent overdubs.

“Schubert’s music is always associated in my imagination with a journey in a horse-drawn carriage. Outside, the scenery is flowing by. Cities, mountains, rivers, lakes, villages. At times the carriage slows down, then it speeds up again, but I always have that feeling of being on a journey. Not on foot and not on horse, but in a carriage on wheels.” (Elena Bashkirova)
