In addition, UMe has released Funky Nation: The Detroit Instrumentals, a group of 14 tracks that Gaye recorded in late summer and fall of 1971, after the initial release of What's Going On. Instead of touring in the wake of the album's success, Gaye cut funk and rock jams with a one-time-only band led by Motown's then-touring drummer Hamilton Bohannan: 17-year-old Ray Parker, Jr., Melvin Ragin, a.k.a. "Wah Wah Watson" (himself just 20) and Leroy Emmanuel of the Fabulous Counts (a relatively experienced 25-year-old) on guitars, and Michael Henderson, age 20, on bass. Gaye played keyboards and percussion. While a few tracks on Funky Nation had been issued across previous special releases, most of the tracks were newly issued on the What's Going On 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition in 2011, and now for the first time they will be getting their own individual digital release.

The disc was certified triple Platinum in the United States, selling well over six million copies worldwide. It was nominated for a 1984 Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, spawning the two-time Grammy Award-winning smash, "Sexual Healing". It was ranked #37 on the Rolling Stone list of the best albums of the 1980s decade and the NME named the album as its Album of the Year in 1983.

Paul Young's edition of Columbia/Legacy's budget-priced SUPER HITS compilation series is an inexpensive summation of Young's '80s tenure with the label. The selection focuses on his classic blue-eyed-soul singles, "Come Back and Stay," "Everytime You Go Away," and "Bite the Hand That Feeds." Also featured are several superlative covers, among them Marvin Gaye's "Wherever I Lay My Hat," The Chi-Lites' "Oh Girl," Ann Peebles' "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down," and Young's unusual rearrangement of Joy Division's classic "Love Will Tear Us Apart."

Jazz / Soul Jazz / Organ

Super Soul was a little funkier than much soul-jazz that had passed before 1967, and its horn parts sometimes slanted more toward pop and soundtrack territory. That was particularly evident on one of the strongest cuts, the opening "Why Don't You Do Right?," where the rhythm (particularly with the aid of a conga drum) goes into grooves that are at least as much soul as jazz, and the horns have a TV adventure theme-like flavor. The album's a little on the innocuous side, even for a genre (Prestige 1960s soul-jazz) that can be pretty homogeneous. It's easygoing background party music, though Holmes summons an interesting light, prickly, almost vibes-like organ sound at times, as on the solo for the cover of Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar."

The Velvet Underground’s classic self-titled third album, released in March 1969, by MGM, was a departure from the band’s first two albums in more ways than one. Gone was co-founding member John Cale, and in his place was a 21-year-old with Long Island roots named Doug Yule, who stepped right in. The record was also a stylistic leap, as Lou Reed describes it in Rolling Stone editor David Fricke’s liner notes, “I thought we had to demonstrate the other side of us. Fricke calls it “a stunning turnaround… 10 tracks of mostly warm, explicit sympathy and optimism, expressed with melodic clarity, set in gleaming double-guitar jangle and near-whispered balladry. Or as the late rock critic Lester Bangs put it, “How do you define a group like this, who moved from ‘Heroin’ to ‘Jesus’ in two short years?”
