In celebration of the Golden Anniversary of the iconic Marvin Gaye album “Let’s Get It On,” Motown/UMe is releasing digitally a revised and expanded “Let’s Get It On: Deluxe Edition” on August 25, the day before the album’s original release date in 1973 fifty years prior. Featuring a fascinating trove of 33 bonus tracks, 18 of them previously unreleased, the Prince of Soul’s creative explorations continued to unfold with the production of this pivotal release. Collectively, the bonus material leans into the story of Gaye’s multi-layered personal struggles during the album’s creation. To honor this milestone, a “Let’s Get It On” event will take place at the GRAMMY Museum on August 23 featuring Smokey Robinson, Jimmy Jam, and Marvin Gaye biographer David Ritz. Get tickets here.

Generally regarded as an iconic nightclub in the history of New York City, the Copa represented that and more to Motown owner Berry Gordy. For Gordy, the Copa was one of many benchmarks indicating that his little experiment called Motown was successful, and having his artists there was the ultimate symbol of how far he had come. The Supremes already had their shot at the Copa, and a live album was issued shortly thereafter. Next up was Gordy's rebellious but chart topping prodigy, Marvin Gaye. In many respects this was the ideal performance for Gaye, as many of the singers he grew to idolize shared the stage there at one point or another, with names like Sinatra and Cole.

One of the most gifted, visionary, and enduring talents ever launched into orbit by the Motown hit machine, Marvin Gaye blazed the trail for the continued evolution of popular black music. Moving from lean, powerful R&B to stylish, sophisticated soul to finally arrive at an intensely political and personal form of artistic self-expression, his work not only redefined soul music as a creative force but also expanded its impact as an agent for social change.

Much to the chagrin of Motown executives and soul fans, Marvin Gaye had a penchant for wanting to record soft, sentimental ballads over the formula that made Motown the juggernaut that it was. Hello Broadway is one of several compilations of sessions recorded in the early- to mid-'60s that finds Gaye's smooth, seductive voice covering a wide range of material. But Hello Broadway is Gaye singing standards from Broadway musicals, and for diehard fans this is a real treat. And while there are moments where Gaye simply emulates Nat King Cole rather than being himself, this is nonetheless an enjoyable listen. Diehard fans will most likely already have this in their collection, along with When I'm Alone I Cry and Romantically Yours, but casual fans would be better served starting off with the much more accessible Vulnerable, which compiles the highlights from the aforementioned recordings.

A platinum-selling singer, Esther Phillips had a long and storied career and all of her recordings for KUDU (sub-label of CTI) have something nice on them, but this is probably the best one. The credits for “From A Whisper To A Scream“, Esther’s 1972 Kudu debut - considered by many to be her finest album for the label - lists such renowned players as Hank Crawford on sax, Eric Gale and Cornell Dupree on guitar, Bernard Purdie on drums, Richard Tee on keyboards and Gordon Edwards on bass. Also enlisting the cream of background singers (Joshie Armstead, Hilda Harris and Tasha Thomas) giving Esther just the right vocal cushion for her blues-tinged interpretations of works by everyone from poet/singer Gil Scott-Heron and the great Marvin Gaye to New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint and soul man Eddie Floyd.

"Kiwanuka" is the third studio album by English singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka. His first two albums established him as a folksy symphonic soul man akin to Bill Withers and Terry Callier, and set the bar pretty high. This one knocks it skyward. Together with producer-to-the-stars Danger Mouse and London hip-hop producer Inflo, the British-Ugandan 32-year-old has broadened his territory to stretch from Donny Hathaway-style melancholy soul through to Rolling Stones-y gospel rock, psychedelic soul and breakbeat. There are strings and harps, samples of civil rights campaigners, Hendrix-type frazzled guitars and Burt Bacharach-type orchestrations. The dreamlike, revelatory quality is reminiscent of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and Primal Scream's "Screamadelica".

In late 1961, John Lee Hooker stepped into a Chicago studio for a single-day session with Motown's tight, swinging house band—which by then had propelled hits by Stevie Wonder, The Temptations and Marvin Gaye—and went electric.
