„In 1972, things were rapidly shifting in Marvin Gaye's world. He was coming off of one of his most wide-reaching hit albums with 1971's instant classic What's Going On, and his recording contract with Motown subsidiary Tamla was renewed for a cool million dollars and total creative control, making him one of the most successful R&B artists of his day. With Motown's offices migrating west from Detroit to Los Angeles, Gaye followed suit, beginning work on Trouble Man, both the score to a blaxploitation film of the same name and the soundtrack that would be his next album.

New York, NY (November 17, 2022) – The music of Marvin Gaye transcends time in ways that can’t be described. From relatable songs about romance and heartbreak like “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” to socially conscious meditations “What’s Going On” and “Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)”, his music continues to resonate across generations. One of the most soulful, celebrated voices and songwriters in music history, Marvin Gaye cemented a legacy as a trailblazer in R&B and beyond. His lush arrangements, irresistible grooves, and silky smooth yet emotive vocal delivery earned him 12 Grammy nominations, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. However, the true magic of Gaye’s music was his ability to weave emotion or deep socio-political commentary into melodies and harmonics that, sonically, left the listener feeling good, no matter what the sentiment behind the lyrics – a rare feat that is truly difficult to achieve.

With the exception of Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye is probably the greatest male singer of the 20th century. His greatest hits collected here can still charm a listener's ear. From soulful love ballads to socially conscious protest songs, Marvin always had the sweetest voice and the tightest harmonies. He could seduce with the best of them, but he never stopped evolving as an artist as this collection proves.

Released in 1994 on Motown Records, the collection features some rarities from the soul singer's catalog during his formative years in the label between his breakthrough year as an R&B star in 1963 to around the time of his late-1960s hits including "I Heard It through the Grapevine". Covering material he worked on with luminaries such as Holland-Dozier-Holland, Smokey Robinson and William "Mickey" Stevenson, the disc showcases Gaye's growth as a vocalist. In 1999, an expanded version was released including bonus tracks and a rare interview.

Marvin Gaye's 1970s recordings reflected his growing awareness of social issues–"What's Going On," "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)"–coupled with a freewheeling sexuality ("Let's Get It On," "Come Get to This," "I Want You"). On both counts, Gaye was out in front of the times, and helped shape the discussion during that turbulent time. This set does a good job of briefly limning the highlights of Gaye's '70s work; coupled with the 20th Century Masters companion volume of his '60s hits, it gives a fair if less than definitive overview of one of pop's most prolific and important hitmakers. –Daniel Durchholz

Choice entrees featuring Marvin Gaye and his duet darlings, Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Tammi Terrell, and Diana Ross. Gaye's efforts with Diana Ross have only two representatives, but they both sizzle. "You're a Special Part of Me" and "My Mistake" had the potential to enter the Top 10 but neither did, though both made inroads on the charts. The former is an uptempo, lavish production with a driving beat. The latter is a lovely, deceivingly fast testimonial, Gaye's and Ross' voices gel on the delightful romp. Mary Wells, Gaye's first partner, teams with him for two songs, the two-sided hit they enjoyed, "Once Upon a Time," a floating, moody ballad, and the rollicking "What's the Matter with You Baby." Kim Weston fares better, four of her waxings with Gaye made the cut. Everyone's down with "It's Take Two," but are you familiar with the yearning, silky smooth "I Want You Round," or the melodic proclamation of bliss "It's Got to Be a Miracle (This Thing Called Love)"? Twelve of the 21 tracks are Gaye and Terrell sides.

The original, 9-track Marvin Gaye Live! LP first arrived on June 19, 1974, following Marvin’s previous smash album, Let’s Get It On. Driven by the ecstatically received performance of “Distant Lover,” the elaborately packaged live album hit #1 on the Soul/R&B Album Chart for two weeks in addition to climbing to #8 on the Pop Album Chart. It also garnered a GRAMMY® Award nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. This new Deluxe Edition paints the full picture of the evening, boasting the addition of four rare cuts: “Flying High (In the Friendly Sky),” “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology),” “Come Get To This,” and “Keep Gettin’ It On,” plus a spoken word interlude where Marvin sweetly acknowledges the band – consisting of stellar studio players including Motown legend James Jamerson on bass and a full 30+-piece orchestra – and his “Let’s Get It On” creative partner, Ed Townsend.
