I started writing the songs on this album as the pandemic began winding down; the titular song “What Did You Miss” pointed the way forward, with its final verse: “I’ve been writing it down/song by song/as a personal history” when imagining this collection of songs as memoir, and how the wisdom that comes with growing older becomes a north star, whether one is celebrating life’s joys or navigating life’s inevitable losses. From the first verse of “Paint + Turpentine” about sitting in the dark of the Birchmere Music Hall watching Guy Clark teach a master class in songwriting and story telling, to coming to terms with how later life turned out in “Girl and Her Dog”, to inventorying what matters in “The Saving Things” to discovering the wisdom in words and phrases that we usually roll our eyes towards in “Say It Anyway”, it is my hope that these songs allow the listener to come away not only with a musical sketch of my life from young adulthood on, but also an affirming reflection of their own life as well.

Five-time Grammy-winner Mary Chapin Carpenter’s 15th studio album, The Dirt And The Stars, finds the singer-songwriter pondering life’s intimate, personal moments and exploring its most universally challenging questions at an unprecedented time. Written at her rural Virginia farmhouse before stay-at-home orders became the “new normal,” the songs celebrate invaluable experiences and irreplaceable wisdom, while also advocating exploration of the best in all of us.

The trio of Mary Chapin Carpenter, Julie Fowlis, and Karine Polwart first came together as a writing experiment coming out of the pandemic lockdown. With touring off the calendar, multi-Award winning US singer-songwriter Carpenter was looking for something new and reached out to Fowlis and Polwart, two highly acclaimed Scottish singer-songwriters whose work she had long admired.

The 1994 sequel to her mainstream country breakthrough on Come on Come On further underscores Mary Chapin Carpenter's true identity, more Ivy League folk rocker than new country cowgirl. Her coolly delivered, deeply felt songs include meditations on family, community, and social injustice without rant or cant, never more so than on the gently incisive midlife reflections of the title song, which filters historic milestones and childhood lessons through its delicate verses. Elsewhere, she sketches a heart-breaking, restrained speculation on the inner life of a blind, deaf mystery man ("John Doe No. 24") with the economy and detail of good short story. The set's many love songs are no less intelligent, emotionally authentic, or moving. Chapin Carpenter's elegant yet earthy alto is beautifully framed in the settings, coproduced with longtime collaborator John Jennings, that balance jangling guitars, rippling piano, occasional fiddle and crisp rhythm sections closer to the best of L.A. country rock than what normally emanates from Nashville. –Sam Sutherland

2014 release from the acclaimed singer/songwriter. Songs From The Movie, with its compelling orchestral reinvention of classic Mary Chapin Carpenter compositions, is an artistic landmark for Mary Chapin. Collaborating with composer/arranger and producer Vince Mendoza and working once again with co-producer Matt Rollings, the album harkens to her love of classic film and symphonic music. Citing as inspiration such seminal film composers as Elmer Bernstein and Thomas Newman, and contemporary symphonic composers like Tobias Picker and Morten Lauridsen, Carpenter had long imagined this project but it wasn't until she had the chance to work with Mendoza that it came to fruition.
