A rare recording from the 60s - one that showcases two different sides of singer Mary Wells, in a mode that's different than her work for other labels! The "two sides" in the title are Mary's soul side and her more sophisticated one - the former served up in a batch of great 60s soul covers that echo with an Atlantic sound that's even harder than Mary's earlier work - the latter by a host of groovy 60s pop numbers, done with fuller arrangements, and a vocal range that really surprised us.

This revealing double album from Motown's first crossover star, Mary Wells, contains 47 tracks, 23 of them never before heard. Something New: Motown Lost & Found is an overview of Wells working with nearly every producer at the label, from Smokey Robinson to Holland-Dozier-Holland to Berry Gordy. Among the unreleased songs are newly discovered duets with Marvin Gaye and the young Supremes, as well as sessions for an unfinished standards album with the Four Tops. The collection also includes 24 songs issued after Wells left Motown and three more rare duets with Gaye, all in stereo mixes for the first time.

This triple-pack is excellent value, featuring the first three (& best) albums by Psychedlic Furs: 1980s eponymous debut, 1981's Talk Talk Talk & 82's Forever Now. The Psychedelic Furs is one of the fine debut albums of that era- up there with Crocodiles, The Affectionate Punch, Kilimanjaro, The Modern Dance & 3 Imaginary Boys. Here The Furs presented their original sound- Richard Butler's cracked Iggy Pop in hell vocals, minimal drumbeats, sinister sax, leftfield pop. It opens with the epic India- which builds up from a swirling post-punk equivalent of Led Zep (see also Echo & Bunnymen's Going UP) to a pulsing new wave rocker- a great sense of drama & the ultimate opening track (Richard Butler's almost trademark rap appearing).

Mary Esther Wells was an American singer, who helped to define the emerging sound of Motown in the early 1960s. Along with The Supremes, The Miracles, The Temptations, and the Four Tops, Wells was said to have been part of the charge in black music onto radio stations and record shelves of mainstream America, "bridging the color lines in music at the time."With a string of hit singles composed mainly by Smokey Robinson, including "The One Who Really Loves You"", "Two Lovers" (1962), the Grammy-nominated "You Beat Me to the Punch" (1962) and her signature hit, "My Guy" (1964), she became recognized as "The Queen of Motown" until her departure from the company in 1964, at the height of her popularity. She was one of Motown's first singing superstars.

Akin to the Darkness in their unabashedly over the top, retro-fetishist, classic rock style, English rockers the Struts burst onto an unsuspecting public with big dreams and loud mouths to match. The band was the brainchild of singer Luke Spiller, the child of strict Christian parents, who had dreamed of being a showman ever since becoming obsessed with Michael Jackson at the age of seven. With his sexualized swagger, powerful voice, and outrageous pronouncements like "I was born to do this, and I'll die doing it," Spiller came off like a cross between Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, and Robert Plant. The band's music was a similar blend of '60s and '70s tropes, with big, singalong choruses that earned their videos hundreds of thousands of YouTube hits and won them a deal with Mercury Records.
