In addition to their latest Intertel video release the HMC label have announced their next CD release, ‘1974 L.A. Jam sessions’ – For those of you that enjoyed ‘A Toot and a Snore’,
the Mistral label release from the CD bootlegs heyday that featured John Lennon and a cast of many sloshing about in the record plant in L.A. in the middle of John’s ‘lost weekend’.
Variously drunken, rude and sloppy in equal measures, this was one release that gave a fly on the walls overview of Lennon and chums, ‘letting their hair down’.
This new release features a new transfer of that tape which extends the recording but a few seconds at either side, the rest of the two disk set features yet another session at the studios
while recording Harry Nilson’s ‘Pussy Cats’ album with a different set of characters including Simon and Garfunkel turned up to play.

The Capitol Albums is a 2 volume, 8 disc box set comprising The Beatles' 1964 and 1965 American Capitol Records releases. The set, which features the first official stereo versions of a number of tracks on compact disc, was released in late 2004 and 2006. The CDs did not contain the original George Martin mixes released in Britain in the 1960s. Instead, the CDs were mastered from mixes prepared by Capitol A&R executive Dave Dexter Jr. The Capitol Albums Volume 1 contains the first four Beatles albums issued by Capitol. The Capitol Albums Volume 2 contains the four Beatles albums issued by Capitol in 1965. Each of these albums is presented first in stereo and then in mono.

Other companies have Carl Perkins sets, but no one else has all the Sun recordings (complete - with some previously unissued) as well as his Columbia recordings from 1958-1962, and everything he cut for Decca between 1963 and 1965. We start in 1954 with the early rockabilly sound of 'Honky Tonk Gal', then the early country singles, and then 'Blue Suede Shoes' and those classic Sun rockabilly tracks. We have Your True Love at its original tempo and speeded-up for single release, and we have newly discovered alternate takes. Then we have all the early Columbia recordings like 'Where The Rio De Rosa Flows', 'Jive After Five', 'Pink Pedal Pushers', and 'Pointed Toe Shoes', and finally we have the Decca sides from Nashville and London, like 'Big Bad Blues', 'Lonely Heart', and 'Monkey Shine'. The first and last word on early Carl Perkins. Classic indeed.

Let's call a spade a spade. Orion is an Elvis impersonator. No more, no less. That he's a good Elvis impersonator is important, since if he wasn't, Sun probably wouldn't have tried to promote his recordings as if they were genuine Elvis material, even going to the extremes of overdubbing Orion's voices on recordings by such Sun stalwarts as Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. This doesn't make him any better, but it sure makes him fascinating, particularly because he is gifted at mimicry and these are pretty good evocations of Elvis at his peak…

Four CD set. Best known for their 1965 hit, the brooding garage pop masterpiece 'Take A Heart', Coventry band The Sorrows cut a clutch of similarly vital 45s and the Take A Heart album before frontman Don Fardon left in 1966. While Fardon went on to a solo career, The Sorrows regrouped and moved to Italy, where they had a couple of minor hit singles and released the psych-rock album Old Songs, New Songs before breaking up at the end of the decade. While those two distinct phases of the band have been individually anthologized before, Pink Purple Yellow And Red represents the first time that they have been assembled under one roof, and as such stands as the definitive document of The Sorrows' fascinating career. In addition to those pivotal mid-Sixties singles, the package includes the entire "Take A Heart" album in both mono and stereo, the "Old Songs, New Songs" LP and an earlier acetate-only demo album that was scrapped when two members of the band left. The set also features their collaborations with soundtrack maestro Ennio Morricone, their title song to the Italian spy movie Ypotron, a superb acetate-only early 1968 single, spin-off singles by The Eggy and Renegade, a 1980 live show from the reformed band and, in a thrilling new archival find, four previously unissued 1964 recordings with legendary producer Joe Meek. Housed in a clamshell box, and including a lavish booklet containing many rare photos and a detailed essay on the band's activities, the set Pink Purple Yellow And Red is an essential purchase for anyone with more than a passing interest in Sixties British pop.
