Winner of the 1983 National Book Award, The Mathematical Experience presented a highly insightful overview of mathematics that effectively conveyed its power and beauty to a large audience of mathematicians and non-mathematicians alike. The study edition of the work followed about a decade later, supplementing the original material of the book with exercises to provide a self-contained treatment usable for the classroom.

This publication is a Special Issue of the journal Axioms entitled “Calculus of Variations, Optimal Control and Mathematical Biology: A Themed Issue Dedicated to Professor Delfim F. M. Torres on the Occasion of His 50th birthday”. This Special Issue is dedicated to Professor Delfim F. M. Torres on his 50th birthday, as a recognition of his significant contributions to Mathematics, in particular regarding the calculus of variations, optimal control, and mathematical biology. Professor Torres is a distinguished University Professor, a highly cited researcher in Mathematics (in the top 1% for Mathematics in the Web of Science in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019), and a lifetime member of the American Mathematical Society.

This book collects papers presented at the International Conference on Mathematical Modelling and Computational Intelligence Techniques (ICMMCIT) 2021, held at the Department of Mathematics, The Gandhigram Rural Institute (Deemed to be University), Gandhigram, Tamil Nadu, India, from 10–12 February 2021. Significant contributions from renowned researchers from fields of applied analysis, mathematical modelling and computing techniques have been received for this conference. Chapters emphasize on the research of computational nature focusing on new algorithms, their analysis and numerical results, as well as applications in physical, biological, social, and behavioural sciences. The accepted papers are organized in topical sections as mathematical modelling, image processing, control theory, graphs and networks, and inventory control.

Mathematical modeling is both a skill and an art and must be practiced in order to maintain and enhance the ability to use those skills. Though the topics covered in this book are the typical topics of most mathematical modeling courses, this book is best used for individuals or groups who have already taken an introductory mathematical modeling course. Advanced Mathematical Modeling with Technology will be of interest to instructors and students offering courses focused on discrete modeling or modeling for decision making.

The life and soul of any science are its problems. This is particularly true of mathematics, which, not referring to any physical reality, consists only of its problems, their solutions, and, most excitingly, the challenges they pose. Mathematical problems come in many flavours, from simple puzzles to major open problems. The problems stimulate, the stories of their successful solutions inspire, and their applications are wide.

It has been over a decade since the release first edition of the now classic original edition of Murray's Mathematical Biology. Since then mathematical biology and medicine has grown at an astonishing rate and has established itself as a distinct discipline. Mathematical modelling is now being applied in every major discipline in the biomedical sciences. Though the field has become increasingly large and specialized, this book remains important as a text that introduces some of the exciting problems which arise in the biomedical sciences and gives some indication of the wide spectrum of questions that modelling can address.

The book records the essential discoveries of mathematical and computational scientists in chronological order, following the birth of ideas on the basis of prior ideas ad infinitum. The authors document the winding path of mathematical scholarship throughout history, and most importantly, the thought process of each individual that resulted in the mastery of their subject. The book implicitly addresses the nature and character of every scientist as one tries to understand their visible actions in both adverse and congenial environments. The authors hope that this will enable the reader to understand their mode of thinking, and perhaps even to emulate their virtues in life.

This volume discusses the theoretical foundations of a new inter- and intra-disciplinary meta-research discipline, which can be succinctly called cognitive metamathematics, with the ultimate goal of achieving a global instance of concrete Artificial Mathematical Intelligence (AMI). In other words, AMI looks for the construction of an (ideal) global artificial agent being able to (co-)solve interactively formal problems with a conceptual mathematical description in a human-style way.
