Ronnie Earl's Maxwell Street is named in honour of blues pianist and previous member of the Broadcasters David Maxwell and is a nod to Chicago's Maxwell Street where blues musicians gathered to play outside for the Sunday market crowds. It confirms Ronnie Earl's status as one of the most soulful blues/soul/jazz guitarists working today. Earl is a three-time Blues Award winner as Guitarist Of The Year working with his band of over 25 years. This album is dedicated to my big brother David Maxwell. We were born on the same day ten years apart. His playing was a deep as the ocean, as high as the sky and as bright as a quasar. When he passed I felt a huge loss as I still do.

Put on your dancing shoes and jive the night away. Standards like In the Mood and When the Saints Come Marching In will put a new lift in your step. Instrumentation includes saxophones, trumpets, trombones, French horn, piano, guitar, bass & drums. When I was a kid, back in the '60's, my dad listened to a group of records called "The Swing Era"… I believe from Time-Life. I grew up loving the swing rhythms and stylings of "Little Brown Jug", "Take The 'A' Train, and "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" as they popped and hissed out of our giant console stereo. I've tried digitally remastered versions of the originals, like "Glenn Miller-A Memorial", but have always been disappointed by, well, the pops and hiss, and the generally low fidelity that these great old songs were recorded with… not their fault! But "In The Big Band Mood" faithfully recaptures the music in new recordings by Michael Maxwell and his orchestra, and their rendition of what I consider to be one of the most perfect pieces of music of all time - "In The Mood" - is excellent. I highly recommend this album!

Maxwell's solo debut has been a long time in coming, but it been worth the wait, as he neatly sidesteps the curse of the non-vocalist bandleader. Bringing in Darrell Nulisch for one vocal ("Heart Attack") only distracts from this fine instrumental showcase for David's prodigious abilities. Maxwell literally sparkles on the gospel-ish sanctified shout of "Sister Laura Lee," the New Orleans strut of "Breakdown On the Bayou," the boogie woogie classic "Honky Tonk Train" and "Manhattan Max," trading licks throughout with guest stars Ronnie Earl, Duke Levine and saxman supreme Mark "Kaz" Kazanoff, basically the cream of the New England blues mafia. This is more than just an impressive debut; this is a record of great playing and uncommon musical depth.

Peter Maxwell Davies's Strathclyde Concertos, jointly commissioned by Strathclyde Regional Council and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in 1987, have given rise to a whole family of concertos for different and unusual instruments. Strathclyde Concerto No. 9 provides an opportunity for woodwind instruments to shine as soloists, the music inspired by the infinite shades of winter light reflected from the seas of Orkney. The final tenth concerto is "a concerto for orchestra that's as bracing as a gale on the rugged Orkney cliffs" (BBC Music Magazine), and the delightful Carolísima is filled with dances and singable tunes.

Shawn Maxwell’s New Tomorrow is a quintet made up of five of Chicago’s finest musicians. Performing all original material, they specialize in a style of jazz that is heavily influenced and blended with several other modern genres. Focusing on composition just as much as improvisation, they reveal stunning melodies hidden within complex time signatures. This new approach in Maxwell’s writing brings a perfect blend of composition and improvisation for a new direction in jazz.

I can't tell you how impressive this piece of music is ! It's one song almost 39 minutes long called "Prometheus". This is an all instrumental work consisting of mellotron, flute, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, organ and more. This is very complex music that is very intense. In the liner notes the band specifically thanks "ANGLAGARD for inspiring this project". And certainly that is who I thought of most of the time I listened to this amazing work as well as SINKADUS.

Award-winning blues pianist David Maxwell teams up with longtime friend, slidemaster Louisiana Red for an untamed session of original songs and stories that recalls back rooms, roadhouses, and the earliest days of Chicago blues. Red is at his spontaneous best, and Maxwell complements and solos with sensitivity, fire and originality. This is a long-overdue collaboration between two of the deepest bluesmen alive. David Maxwell and Louisiana Red met each other in the early 70s, when David was touring with Freddie King. Their paths would continue to cross in the decades that followed, and although they became good friends and often performed together, this is their first pure duo recording, and it summons the fire and spirit of the greatest days of Chicago blues.

One of the preeminent performers in Chicago jazz, saxophonist Shawn Maxwell has released several recordings featuring his quartet or his sonically expanded dectet, 'Alliance. ' With his New Tomorrow group, he augments his working quartet with the singular trumpet voices of three of Chicago's finest'- Victor Garcia, Chad McCullough and Corey Wilkes - and the inspired and often dazzling vocalist, Dee Alexander, for a set of ten modern, electric originals. Focusing on composition as much as improvisation, the quintets reveal stunning melodies hidden within complex time signatures, textures and grooves.
