Having given up the piano at the age of nine, Alistair McGowan took up music again in his fifties after encouragement from friends and family. Going by this album, his progress is impressive. The pieces here are all straightforward including a Bach prelude and charming works by Mompou, Chopin, Philip Glass and his hero Erik Satie but McGowan digs deep into the colours and textures behind the notes. He has a natural instinct for musical shape and is an inspiration to anyone eager to get playing again.
