Mechanical Ventilation

This book is an introduction to a comprehensive analysis of recent advances and clinical research in noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. The objective of the book is to increase the knowledge and understanding of the reader in the best clinical practice in three main sections.

This book analyses the basic rationale of noninvasive respiratory management in upper airways medical and perioperative disorders and key interactions and clinical implications. It offers key diagnostic tools to detect early and late failure of upper airway disorders whit a noninvasive approach. Furthermore, all medical and post-operative clinical indications of acute and chronic diseases in upper airway respiratory disorders and outcomes are summarized.

This book discusses mechanical ventilation in emergency settings, covering the management of patients from the time of intubation until transfer to the ICU. It provides an introduction to key concepts of physiology pertinent to mechanical ventilation as well as a review of the core evidence-based principles of ventilation. The text highlights the management of mechanical ventilation for critically ill patients with several conditions commonly encountered in EM practice, including acute respiratory distress syndrome, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and traumatic brain injury. It begins by reviewing terminology and definitions as well as pathophysiology and physiology.
