Scotty Hard initially made his reputation in the rap world, but since 2000 or so he's been doing at least as many jazz gigs (if not more), contributing heavily to albums by Sex Mob and Medeski, Martin & Wood. Scotty Hard's Radical Reconstructive Surgery is Hard's first jazz release, put out as part of Thirsty Ear's illustrious Blue Series Continuum. The album is constructed from performances of an amazing all-star group: Matthew Shipp and John Medeski on keyboards, free jazz giant William Parker on bass, and Nasheet Waits on drums, with additional contributions from DJ Olive and percussionist Mauricio Takara.

Bubblehouse (1997) is an album by Medeski Martin & Wood, an American jazz trio that is known for their innovative and genre-blending approach to jazz, funk, blues, and experimental music. The trio—comprising John Medeski on keyboards, Billy Martin on drums, and Chris Wood on bass—has long been known for their improvisational style, as well as for incorporating diverse musical influences into their work. Bubblehouse is one of their more experimental and boundary-pushing albums, and it stands out in their discography as a significant exploration of their sound.

It's hard to believe that after more than two decades together, Medeski, Martin & Wood haven't released an acoustic trio album. Free Magic remedies that. The set was recorded during their 2007 acoustic tour. There are five tunes in this hour-plus set; four are originals. Chris Wood's "Doppler" (a studio version appeared on 20 [available on iTunes]) commences as a rhythmic improv with Billy Martin playing balafon (an African cousin to the xylophone) with John Medeski on a toy piano and a melodica, and Wood bowing his upright. The pace gradually increases before a rhythmically repetitive motif introduces itself.

Medeski, Martin & Wood's Shack Man is the best example to date of the trio's cerebral fusion of soul-jazz, hip-hop, and post-punk worldbeat. Relying on a laid-back groove for most the album, the group just rolls along. Shack Man is the kind of album that will appeal most to soul-jazz beginners; for aficionados, the lack of grit in the groove makes it rather tedious.

The Word was once a one-off gospel album featuring pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph, organist John Medeski, guitarist Luther Dickinson, bassist Chris Crew, and drummer Cody Dickenson. The group toured extensively for this album with positive feedback, then everyone returned to their "regular" groups and lived their normal lives. After 14 years, the group released their second album in 2015 but this was their humble debut.

Medeski Martin & Wood - Radiolarians III (2009)

2009 release from the seemingly unclassifiable trio, the third and final installment in their Radiolarians trilogy. Highlights include the passionate and gritty traditional 'Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down,' the anthemic 'Undone,' and the Latin-influenced acoustic opener 'Chantes Des Femmes.' Overall, Radiolarians III finds the trio doing what they do best - melding genres and improvising. What results, is maybe the strongest and most cohesive album of the entire Radiolarian's series.
