“Élegiaque” includes a collection of compositions written with guitar and lute in mind. It features pieces whose leitmotif is melancholy, sadness and reverie. The album begins with a few fancies by English lutenist John Dowland; in his compositions, he would combine elaborate Renaissance polyphonies with melodies whose vocal features were clearly inspired by Italian influences. Fernando Sor’s Fantasia, written after the death of his student, is a monumental work. Although it was created in the Romantic era, it contains a number of references to the rhetoric of the Renaissance and Baroque. In turn, it is thematically connected with the last link of the album, a collection of several songs by Franz Schubert, including “Death and the Maiden” – these are free arrangements drawing more from Liszt’s transcription than from the original.
Victoria presents a unique 24 CD collection of the complete works of Norway’s most famous composer, Edvard Grieg. It features many works that are rarely performed.

Duncan Browne's melancholy first album, Give Me Take You – released on music impresario Andrew Loog Oldham's Immediate label in August of 1968 – is one wonderfully tender album. Many who only discovered it well after its original release compare its dulcet introspective tone to Nick Drake's albums. It does fall into a similar English folk vein, though Browne's arrangements are, on the whole, more Baroque, giving the album a semi-classical, regal feel. Browne charted his own classical arrangements and wrote out vocal charts for a choir, but turned to his art school friend David Bretton for song lyrics.
