In the liner notes for Collide, Boyz II Men's first album since 2011's Twenty, the trio say their approach was "sing whatever you like," "sing whatever feels right," a move they see as "risky after many years of the same old thing." More revealingly, they confess that they had "lost the joy" and were too concerned with airplay and sales. While those words seem like they should be written in support of an album involving a great deal of creative self-control, Collide was made with at least three dozen songwriters and producers. In fact, Nathan, Shawn, and Wanya produced only the vocals and did none of the writing – surprising, given the amount of effort they put forth for Twenty.

The Hoochie Coochie Men, named after the Willie Dixon song "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man", were Bob Daisley (Rainbow, Ozzy Osbourne, Gary Moore, Uriah Heep) on bass, Tim Gaze on lead vocals and guitar, Rob Grosser on drums and Jim Conway on harmonica The band's life changed drastically when legendary founder member of DEEP PURPLE, Jon Lord decided to join them for a concert at the famous "Basement Club" in Sidney just after a few hours rehearsal. Men at Work were one of the more surprising success stories of the new wave era, rocketing out of Australia in 1982 to become the most successful artist of the year. With its Police-styled rhythms, catchy guitar hooks, wailing saxophones, and off-kilter sense of humor, the band's debut album, Business as Usual, became an international blockbuster, breaking the American record for the most weeks a debut spent at the top of the charts. Their funny, irreverent videos became MTV favorites, helping send "Who Can It Be Now?" and "Down Under" to number one. Men at Work's momentum sustained them through their second album, 1983's Cargo, before the bottom fell out of the band's popularity. After releasing Two Hearts in 1985, Men at Work broke up, becoming one of the better-remembered phenomena of new wave.
