Metrics

Visual quality assessment is an interdisciplinary topic that links image/video processing, psychology and physiology. Many engineers are familiar with the image/video processing; transmission networks side of things but not with the perceptual aspects pertaining to quality. Digital Video Quality first introduces the concepts of human vision and visual quality. Based on these, specific video quality metrics are developed and their design is presented. These metrics are then evaluated and used in a number of applications, including image/video compression, transmission and watermarking.

With the growing ubiquity of computing systems, it is essential that we can rely on the services they deliver. Justifying reliance in computer systems requires scientific techniques to derive evidence from given systems or predict such evidence. This tutorial book gives an overview of the current state of the art in measuring the different aspects of dependability of systems: reliability, security and performance.

This book offers an organized and systematic approach to poset metrics and codes. Poset metrics, or metrics on a vector field determined by a partial order over a finite set, were first introduced in the mid-1990s by the mathematicians Richard A. Brualdi, Janine S. Graves and K. Mark Lawrence, and to date the relevant knowledge on this subject was spread over more than two hundred research papers. Poset metrics generalizes both the standard Hamming metric – the most important metric used in the context of coding theory – and the Niederreiter-Rosenbloom-Tsfasman metric, which is an ultrametric.
