Since the unexpected 2017 death of Tom Petty, longtime Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell has carried on with his band The Dirty Knobs. Joined by Lance Morrison (bass), Matt Laug (drums)and key new addition Chris Holt (guitars, keys, vocals), and recorded by Petty's former brain trust of producers George Drakoulias and Martin Pradler, the Knobs are guitar rock in the classic sense. Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits begins and ends with audience applause, starting with "The Greatest," Campbell's salute to his audience. Closer "Amanda Lynn" is a mandolin frolic originally meant as walk-out music for his live shows. While his voice can be eerily reminiscent of his old bandmate, Campbell is clearly his own man on this third Knobs album—anchored by a pair of well-written, wonderfully recorded numbers. Paced by strummed guitars and ex-Heartbreakers drummer Steve Ferrone, "Angel of Mercy" is the tale of a dangerous femme fatale ("There's too much complication/ I can't figure out/ What she's leading up to/ What she's all about") whose charms are nevertheless irresistible: "Angel of mercy/ Wake me, shake me/ Take me all the way." That's followed by "Dare to Dream," where steady, chiming guitars give way to joyous choruses on which Graham Nash adds sublime vocal support.

British multi-instrumentalist Mike Oldfield offers up this warmly crafted sequel to his 1975 classic Ommadawn, marking a return to a more organic style of composing. After polling fans online about what type of approach they'd like to hear, Oldfield was overwhelmingly urged to revisit the acoustic style heard on his first three albums. Eager for the challenge, he spent nearly a year in his studio crafting what would become 2017's Return to Ommadawn, an instrumental meditation on the prog-folk fantasy world he'd originally imagined four decades prior. A true solo effort, Oldfield plays every instrument on the record, which is divided into "Part I" and "Part II," each lasting about 20 minutes in a nod to the original's vinyl format.

Hubert Sumlin was one of thirteen children born on a farm near Greenwood, Mississippi on November 16, 1931. He learned to play drums and guitar as a small child and was playing at parties and local jukes by the time he was twelve years old. Sumlin's warped style of blues, which has been called "wicked" and "bent", went on to influence everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Frank Zappa. The raw tone in his guitar bites deep when he plays the jump style, ice-cold blues from Chicago. Whether he's playing one of his old guitars or a brand new model, Sumlin runs it through his old Fender amp and really makes it talk. Hubert Sumlin's return to the recording studio is very special because it includes a reunion with his old friend James Cotton. Heart & Soul is a tribute to the many influences and inspirations that make Hubert Sumlin one of the premier blues artists of his time.

"It has been 18 years since I recorded an album under my own name (Night Owl Suite, 2004), not because I didn’t want to, but because sometimes life gets in the way. The most significant event that occurred during this period of time was my wife Nancy’s passing in 2010 from pancreatic cancer.

Good Old Boys is something of a return to form for John Hartford. As with Retrograss, an album he recorded with David Grisman and Mike Seeger, Hartford eschews fiddle tunes to concentrate on a number of good songs. The album kicks off with the melancholy title track, which exalts the virtues of reliable old friends, before delving into tributes to a number of Hartford's bluegrass heroes. "On the Radio" recalls the first time he heard Earl Scruggs' banjo coming in loud and clear, and it's one of the catchiest tunes on the album.

EL VY (pronounced like a plural of Elvis; rhymes with ‘hell pie’) is the musical collaboration between Matt Berninger, vocalist and lyricist of The National, and Brent Knopf, the Portland musician and producer best known for his work in Menomena and his more recent band, Ramona Falls. Their debut album "Return To The Moon" is a project Berninger and Knopf have been thinking about for years.
