Miles Davis Quintet With John Coltrane - Live In Zurich (2005)

Key material from the Miles Davis Quintet with John Coltrane – recorded on their famous 1960 European tour, and paired here with some other material from an earlier date! The first 5 tracks on the set feature Davis and Coltrane working with Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb – on a live date from Zurich in April of 1960. Tracks are all quite long, with key Davis and Coltrane solo touches – and include "Fran Dance", "If I Were A Bell", So What", and "All Blues". The last 4 tracks on the CD are from a Cafe Bohemia date in 1958 – and feature a slightly different lineup that includes Bill Evans on piano and Philly Joe Jones on drums – performing shorter, lighter takes on "Walkin", "Four", "Bye Bye Blackbird", and "Two Bass Hit".

Featuring the classic Quintet lineup and recorded live by Radio France, direct from Salle Pleyel in Paris on November 3, 1969. As the story goes, there were two sets that Radio France had recorded – the second set was broadcast but the first set wasn’t. The second set has made the rounds with collectors for years and the sound, mono and somewhat dull, was the best that was available of this pivotal concert. However, in recent years the first set has surfaced from the archives of Radio France and the sound is vastly improved, and in stereo.

A monumental innovator, icon, and maverick, trumpeter Miles Davis helped define the course of jazz as well as popular culture in the 20th century, bridging the gap between bebop, modal music, funk, and fusion. Throughout most of his 50-year career, Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical, introspective style, often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate. It was a style that, along with his brooding stage persona, earned him the nickname "Prince of Darkness." However, Davis proved to be a dazzlingly protean artist, moving into fiery modal jazz in the '60s and electrified funk and fusion in the '70s, drenching his trumpet in wah-wah pedal effects along the way.
