Most of vibraphonist Milt Jackson's recordings as a leader have been at the head of a quartet or quintet. This spirited set has a variety of "near blues" material being interpreted by an all-star septet featuring such unique voices as trumpeter Harry "sweets" Edison, the tenor of Eddie "lockjaw" Davis and altoist Eddie "cleanhead" Vinson in addition to Jackson, pianist Art Hillery, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Larance Marable. There are plenty of magical moments created on this set by these classic jazzmen.

Milt Jackson and Oscar Peterson are two of the most formidable swingers in jazz. When they collaborated, the swing was more than doubled. This concert under Jackson's leadership at the 1975 Montreux Jazz Festival reunited them for the first time in years. The recording captures their pleasure at performing together again and the excitement and appreciation of the Montreux audience in hearing them. The album is dominated by the exultation of their playing in up-tempo numbers like "Mack the Knife," Lee Morgan's blues "Speed Ball," and a brisk "Stella by Starlight." They provide contrast in a pair of superb ballad performances on "Everything Must Change" and "Nature Boy." Peterson achieves on Ahmad Jamal's "Night Mist Blues" an intensity remarkable even for him. Peterson's bass stalwart Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and drummer Mickey Roker, a Jackson favorite, join in the fun.

The only reason I can think of for there not yet being a review of these four boxed sets, is that those who own them are just too busy having one hell of a blast listening to them. Some people moan about the 50 year copyright law for audio recordings in Europe, but without it this highly entertaining, eye-opening and educational undertaking could never have taken place. These 100 discs (spread over four boxed sets of 25 discs) tell the story of jazz from 1898 to 1959.

Coleman Hawkins - The Bebop Years
Genre: Jazz | MP3 | 320 Kbps | Release: 2000 | 4 CD Set | ~ 506 Mb | Covers included

This is a magnificent collection of the 1940's work of tenor sax great Coleman Hawkins, the father of the jazz saxophone. Much of it has been previously released in bits and pieces, but it has never been collected in a single package, and never with such tremendous sound. This box-set focuses on Hawkins' work between 1939 and 1949, presenting the original master of the tenor sax in a wide variety of settings. 88 tracks in all. 2000 release.

Coleman Hawkins - The Bebop Years (a 4 CD Set)

The title of this set is a little misleading; these recordings are more swing than bebop. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful collection that every jazz fan should own.
