Miracle in The Rain

A fanciful, O. Henryesque tale set in New York City during World War II. A shy, lonely woman and a dashing soldier from Tennessee meet in the rain late one afternoon, and end up falling in love. But Fate threatens to come between them.

The fate that brings lovers together can easily tear them apart as can be seen in this sentimental tragedy that centers on an ordinary-looking secretary's (Jane Wyman) lonely life. Other than working and spending some free time with a spinster (Eileen Heckart), who is her best friend, the woman devotes most of her time attempting to cheer up her deeply depressed, eternally grieving mother, who has never recovered from her husband's leaving her. One day the secretary is in Central Park when a cloudburst occurs and she ends up meeting a handsome young soldier from Tennessee (Van Johnson). Although they couldn't be more different, they fall deeply in love. Unfortunately, he goes overseas and gets killed. The poor secretary nearly falls apart both mentally and physically. She seems near death when one day she is walking near St. Patrick's Cathedral when a second miracle occurs, giving her the will to live again.

The Teenagers are an American integrated doo wop group, most noted for being one of rock music's earliest successes, presented to international audiences by DJ Alan Freed. The group, which made its most popular recordings with young Frankie Lymon as lead singer, is also noted for being rock's first all-teenaged act. They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993.

Frankie Lymon was just 14 years old when he burst onto the scene as leader of an R&B doowop group in the wake of the first flush of rock 'n' roll in the charts during the mid-50s, and the precociously talented teenager, already writing his own songs, made a huge impact on both sides of the Atlantic with his landmark debut hit with The Teenagers "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?". His chart career was telescoped into a few short years, his hits drying up in 1960, and his career declining until his untimely demise in 1968 at the age of 25 from a drug overdose. This 62-track 2-CD set comprises the A & B sides of his singles with The Teenagers and as a solo artist on the Gee and Roulette labels during what was the primary era of his career, along with selected titles from the album "At the London Palladium" and the titles not otherwise released as singles from the album "Rock 'n' Roll" for Roulette. It features all his ten US pop and R&B hits, and his UK chart entries from these years, including the Top 10 hits "Why Do Fools Fall In Love", "Who Can Explain", "I Promise To Remember", "The ABC's Of Love", "Baby Baby" and "Out In The Cold Again". His music represented a fascinating strand of pop/R&B which was a significant part of the musical zeitgeist of the era, and this collection is a substantial showcase for his highly distinctive style and talent.

Counting Crows' first full-length album in more than a decade feels like a bit of a cheat—nearly half of the songs were released on the 2021 EP Butter Miracle: Suite One. But "Spaceman in Tulsa" proves the band still has the chutzpah and pop chops that made them inescapable in the '90s. Just glam enough, and boasting an insidiously catchy chorus, it's cocksure with revved-up guitar and piano and frontman Adam Duritz's most rock 'n' roll growl. In many ways, it feels like a book-end to "Mr. Jones," the band's debut single that shot Counting Crows into the culture (and made them, right away, a love-or-hate band for most). In that 1992 song, Duritz came on like a big dreamer—a guy who wanted to be a "lion" and Bob Dylan: "We all wanna be big stars/ But we don't know why and we don't know how.
