French bluesman Jean Jacques Milteau delivers an earthy tribute to a city steeped in the "tradition" on Memphis. Recorded at Royal Studio in the city in question, Memphis features Milteau's muscular harmonica along with such blues luminaries as Mighty Mo Rodgers, Little Milton, and Mighty Sam McClain. Whining and growling through such stellar original tunes as the second-line funk of "Bon Ton Café" and the driving Motown-sounding title track, the real revelation here is how Milteau and company reinterpret pop tunes as blues. Rodgers turns Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" into a rustic and soulful plea, while Milton gives Sting's "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" an ominous edge. This is mainstream blues at its best.

Jimmie Rodgers was one of the true pioneers of country music, often called "The Father Of Country Music" as well as "The Singing Brakeman" (he worked on the railroads before becoming a professional musician), who broke new ground with his landmark hillbilly recordings of the late 1920s and early '30s. His achievements were all the more remarkable, given that he died from tuberculosis in 1933 at the age of 35, having been first diagnosed with the disease in 1924. He has been cited as an inspiration by artists from all walks of popular music across the decades. He was especially famous for his trademark yodelling, with his recordings featuring a series of his renowned "Blue Yodels". This 110-track 5-CD collection comprises just about all his career releases, which came out on the Victor and Bluebird labels. It naturally features all his best known classics - "In The Jailhouse Now", "Brakeman's Blues", "Waiting For A Train", "Blue Yodel No. 1", "Mule Skinner Blues" and more. He was a hugely important and influential personality whose impact in country, blues, R&B and rock 'n' roll is still making itself felt. This collection offers a substantial and thorough overview of his music and career, and an entertaining showcase for his unique and innovative music.

Milteau became interested in the harmonica when he first heard folk and rock music (such as Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones) in the 1960s. He played with French singers like Yves Montand, Eddy Mitchell, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Maxime Le Forestier, Barbara, and Charles Aznavour in various styles, from blues to jazz. In 1989, he recorded his first solo album, Blues Harp, and toured the world with Manu Galvin at the guitar and with guest musicians like Mighty Mo Rodgers and Demi Evans. He has authored methods for learning the harmonica.

It took a longtime for Leadfoot to become the artist he is today. Others like Rimbaud or Bob Dylan seem to bloom and get their full maturity all of a sudden and either shortly after stop to create or perpetuate the same form for ever.

Harrison Kennedy’s voice, banjo, spoons and guitar, Jean-Jacques Milteau’s imaginative harmonica and Vincent Segal’s lyrical cello converse and play as the members of this inspired trio pay homage to their roots without sacrificing to nostalgia, inventing no less than the future of the blue note in the process. Kennedy owes forbearers who traveled the Underground Railroad all the way to Ontario, fleeing the Southern plantations where they were enslaved. Harrison has kept from this aching heritage a deep respect for the Mississippi and Tennessee roots he nurtures to this day in a truly original and personal fashion.
