Moon Shaped Pool

A Moon Shaped Pool is the ninth studio album by the English rock band Radiohead, released as a digital download and on paid streaming services on 8 May 2016. A physical release followed in June 2016 through Hostess Entertainment in Japan and XL Recordings in other countries. A special edition, containing additional artwork and two more tracks, will be shipped in September 2016. Radiohead worked on A Moon Shaped Pool intermittently after finishing the 2012 tour for their previous album, The King of Limbs, working in southern France with longtime producer Nigel Godrich.

Radiohead's new album A Moon Shaped Pool is available digitally right now, and the band have now detailed the album's physical releases, which are out June 17 and available for pre-order now. In addition to coming out on standard CD and vinyl releases, they've announced a special edition that comes with a CD featuring two bonus tracks and a piece of the band's actual, original master tape from one of the band's many recording sessions. "The tape degrades over time and becomes unplayable," they wrote in the product description. "We thought rather than it ending up as landfill we would cut it up and make it useful as a part of the special edition. A new life for some obsolete technology." Read more about the tape below. The special edition comes in a case bound album ("inspired by the albums for 78rpm shellac records in the library of La Fabrique, France") with 32 pages of original artwork. At some point in the early 21st century, Radiohead became something more than a band: they became a touchstone for everything that is fearless and adventurous in rock, inheriting the throne from David Bowie, Pink Floyd, and the Talking Heads. The latter group gave the band its name – it's an album track on 1986's True Stories – but Radiohead never sounded much like the Heads, nor did they take much from Bowie, apart from their willingness to experiment.
