"Madman Across the Water" is the 4th studio album by Elton John, released in 1971. This was the last album to feature John's regular touring band (Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson) on only a single song. Later band member, percussionist Ray Cooper, makes his first appearance with this album. As with all John songs during this period, the lyrics were penned by his writing partner, Bernie Taupin. This was the last album to be recorded at London's Trident Studios, although subsequent albums would be remixed or overdubbed at Trident. Caleb Quaye and Roger Pope would not play with John again until Rock of the Westies in 1975, following Murray and Olsson's departure from the band. "Madman Across the Water" barely reached #41 on the UK Albums Chart, spending only two weeks there. It has been the lowest-charting album of his career to date. The album fared much better in North America, peaking at #8 on the US Billboard Top Pop Albums and placing at #10 on the year-end list of 1972.

With three drummers, electric guitar, and Highland pipes, Saor Patrol can make a big noise – and here they let out all the stops and do just that. With the Gibson on full distort, they manage to come across as distinctly fearsome, although over the course of a full album it ends up as repetitive, with only a few real variations like "Badholly" (using the hambone rhythm) seeming strikingly different. It's probably far more effective in concert, where the sound and spectacle would be overwhelming, but in the cleaner sonic space of the studio it can't quite work its magic so well. Two Headed Dog - Duncarron Electric: Scottish pipes & drums untamed - with the addition of powerful electric guitar and bass arrangements. This is the hard rock version of Saor Patrol’s album “Duncarron” (not all songs are the same).

The follow-up to the masterful Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman was rushed into existence by a band desperate to finish its next album before an upcoming tour. As a result, it doesn't feel quite as fully realized – a couple of the ballads are overly long and slow the momentum, and Randy Rhoads' guide solo on "Little Dolls" was never replaced with a version intended for the public…
