The Motels, a new wave band known for their sleek, polished sound and the smoky, sultry vocals of lead singer Martha Davis, performed at the Paradise Club in Boston in 1979. The Paradise Club, located in the heart of Boston, was known for its intimate atmosphere and its ability to attract up-and-coming bands. The Motels, who had recently released their self-titled debut album, were one of those up-and-coming bands. The album, which featured hits like "Total Control" and "Closets and Bullets," was a critical success and helped to establish the band's unique blend of new wave and pop.

Designed as a supplement to (not a replacement for) the No Vacancy best-of, Anthologyland is a double-disc compilation of Motels demos, outtakes, live cuts, and other rarities. Prepared with the help of Martha Davis, Anthologyland effectively works as a hidden history of the band, featuring alternate versions of most of their key songs, plus obscurities like their demo of "Take My Breath Away," the Top Gun love theme that ended up assigned to Berlin instead. Casual fans won't find this all that necessary, but for devotees, Anthologyland is a treasure trove.

Finally released on a pair of CDs in 1997 (26 years after it's initial release on vinyl), 200 MOTELS is the soundtrack to Frank Zappa's wacky 1971 motion picture of the same name, which starred Ringo Starr and Keith Moon, among others. Although it enjoyed success as a "midnight movie" in the '70s/early '80s, 200 MOTELS is a difficult movie to comprehend, since the storyline is very abstract (some have hinted that it was made up on the spot!). But even when his music is difficult to understand, Zappa includes many interesting twists and turns, and the soundtrack for 200 MOTELS is no different.

Despite success in Australia, England, and France, The Motels had yet to make it big in the U.S. At a time when record companies still gave bands time to "find their sound," the band had already released two albums and six singles without making a dent in Top 40 radio. Album three, "Apocalypso," was what the band hoped would finally break them out into the mainstream. With then lead guitarist Tim McGovern pretty much in control, and Val Garay engineering, the band went to work recording, re-recording, and dubbing what was hoped to be the breakthrough album. When it was finally submitted to Capitol Records it was pretty much DOA. American AM radio wanted polished, snazzy pop songs and FM radio wanted MOR; "Apocalypso" was neither.

Yes!! Finally, here it is: "200 Motels" in all its glory. We've all seen this movie as it got released on VHS video years and years ago. And now, here's the high quality DVD version. "200 Motels" got shot in 1971 and featured Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention plus Ringo Starr and Keith Moon, to drop just two names. Now that I think of it, Zappa always had this thing for drummers… Anyway, "200 Motels" is a milestone in Zappa's career. I'm not too big a fan of the vaudeville aspect and the on-the-road stories, as you cannot keep on laughing with it, but the music is fabulous. It's Zappa at his best.

Fans of Martha Davis and the Motels have reason to rejoice, whether they first embraced the new wave band during the early '80s when the Motels came roaring out of Los Angeles with their blockbusters "Only The Lonely" and "Suddenly Last Summer" for Capitol Records, or in their more recent and equally powerful incarnation. Martha has assembled a collection of extreme rarities for this collection spotlighting her at the height of her formidable vocal power.
