In Metternich's Vienna, chamber music was the favourite distraction of a number of aristocrats and the leisure class as well as student Bohemia. By 1815, a teenaged Franz Schubert had already written (at least) ten scores for quartet, for the family circle, Hausmusik, without seeking to conceal his models borrowed from Haydn and, especially, Mozart.

The Eybler Quartet completes its exploration of these iconic quartets in an album that showcases radiantly Beethoven’s fiendishly difficult tempi and his genius for finding contrast within a single pulse as well as highlighting the depths of his humour, wit and irony. This second volume features the String Quartets nos. 4-6.

The Juilliard String Quartet was one of the pioneering string quartet formations of the 20th century. Virtuosity in playing technique, sovereign creative power and precisely coordinated tonal balance with X-ray-quality intonation purity characterized the playing of the New York formation around founder and primarius Robert Mann. Indulging in tonal beauty was not their priority. In this way, they moved somewhat outside of what was customary in Central Europe at the time. Their complete recordings for the RCA label, for which they recorded in the short period from 1957 to 1960, appear for the first time bundled on 11 CDs.

This CD includes three works by Max Bruch: his String Quartet in C minor Op. 9, his String Quartet in E major Op. 10, and for the first time ever recorded, his String Quartet in C minor Op. Posth. The well known quartets, Op. 9 and Op. 10, are charming works, indicative of the composers classic style. They contain warm sonorities and catchy melodies, creating a cheerful atmosphere. In 2013 a quartet was found in the Mozart-Stiftung in Frankfurt. After extensive research, it was discovered that the quartet was by a 14-year-old Bruch. The world premiere recording is featured here. Performing these works is the German Diogenes Quartet. English and German liner notes are included with this album.

Having recorded the only complete set of Viottis violin concertos, Franco Mezzena may be counted the foremost modern exponent of an unjustly overlooked composer. Born the year before Mozart in 1755, Giovanni Battista Viotti has been eclipsed by his Salzburg contemporary for who would not be? Yet Viotti wrote so much more than display vehicles for the instrument of which he was the pre-eminent Italian virtuoso of his generation. He composed quartets throughout his eventful career, which included a brief period as a wine merchant.

The musical paths of the four musicians of the Constanze Quartet, who come from southern Europe, were all to be brought together in the small but unique music metropolis of Salzburg. The birthplace of Mozart with its unmistakable classic flair became the ideal artistic breeding ground for the different temperaments from France, Spain, Italy and Germany to find a common musical language. The resulting interpretations, which with their Mediterranean charm are captivating, fresh and soulful at the same time, inspire both listeners and viewers time and time again.

Spanning repertoire from the Classical to the contemporary and some 30 years of the Alban Berg Quartett's career, these recordings evince the achievement of an ensemble whose very name honours both the tradition and innovative musical spirit of its home city, Vienna. Founded in 1970, it soon became recognised as one of the defining quartets of the 20th century and went on to make two landmark recordings of the complete Beethoven cycle, the first in the studio, the second live at Vienna's Konzerthaus (presented here in both CD and DVD versions). This 70-disc set, which in addition features DVDs of Schubert and a live performance in St Petersburg, also documents the Alban Berg Quartett's collaborations with such artists as Sabine Meyer, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Alfred Brendel, Rudolf Buchbinder and Philippe Entremont.
