O Mozart! Immortal Mozart! What countless impressions of a brighter, better life hast thou stamped upon our souls! wrote Schubert in his diary a few months before he started composing his Symphony No. 5. There is a distinctly Mozartian aura to be felt in this piece although the romantic harmonies herald the beginning of a new era: the Concert for Violin and Orchestra, the Rondo and the Polonaise all display the characteristic traits of budding Romanticism. Founded in 1981, Capella Savaria has earned its fame as the first period-instrument chamber orchestra in Hungary. Zsolt Kallo, violinist, acts as the concertmaster, soloist, and artistic director of Capella Savaria.

World premiere recording to mark the commemorative year 2009: Acis and Galatea was one of the most successful of Handel’s works during his lifetime. Following his death it also served as a model for several arrangements by prominent composers, including Mozart. That Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy concerned himself intensively with the work had been known for a long time, however only the parts had survived.

Joseph Martin Kraus (1756-1792) is often referred to as the Swedish Mozart by popular literature. His style was influenced by the Sturm und Drang movement that he got acquainted with in his early years; the dramatic contrast and passion characterising his music can be attributed to this inspiration. Although he is considered to be a composer of stage music, he also composed a large number of instrumental pieces especially for orchestra and chamber orchestra.

Mozart’s horn concertos are so well-known that for many listeners the sound of the horn and Mozart are virtually synonymous. Mozart was not the first composer to write solo concertos for the horn, however, and works from earlier on in the eighteenth century give a quite different perspective on the instrument.

Born in Prague in 1737, Josef Mysliveček spent most of his short life in Italy, where for a while he enjoyed success with his many operas, and became known as ‘Il Boemo’ (‘The Bohemian’). It was also in Italy – in Bologna – that he first met Mozart, in 1770. Their paths would cross again and in letters Mozart wrote about him with affection, describing him as full of ‘fire, spirit and life’. Mysliveček’s influence is apparent in Mozart’s early operas, violin concertos, symphonies and keyboard music. His music soon fell out of fashion, however, and it is only recent decades that have seen more interest in works such as the wind octets, violin concertos and symphonies. In comparison, Mysliveček’s output for keyboard has been somewhat neglected, something which the English pianist Clare Hammond seeks to rectify with her latest disc.

When one of Germany’s most famous filmmakers and stimulating operatic directors focuses her creativity on a rarely performed Handel opera, the result is a “mixture of dancers and singers, comedy and pathos” (The Times). “Admeto”, one of Handel’s most popular operas in his lifetime, was premiered in London in January 1727. Doris Dörrie, whose Japan-inspired feature film “Cherry Blossoms – Hanami” was a major German box-office hit and won several international awards, returns to her beloved Japan in this production… Bernd Lepel
