Die Kölner Akademie and Michael Willens have previously recorded Mozart’s complete piano concertos with Ronald Brautigam, earning praise for their fresh and colourful contributions to the series. The team now releases the first of four projected disc with further Mozart scores, beginning with two of the composer’s best-loved serenades. Serenades were a characteristic feature of Salzburg musical life: opening with a march and continuing with as many as eight or nine separate movements on an orchestral scale, such works will have been ringing in Mozart’s ears from childhood.

Continuing an old tradition of outdoor music, Mozart raised the serenade genre to an outstanding level of accomplishment. Harmonia mundi’s first collaboration with Enrico Onofri and the Münchener Kammerorchester couples his most famous contributions to the form: Eine kleine nachtmusik, the ‘Posthorn’ Serenade (with its picturesque solo for the eponymous instrument) and the majestic ‘Haffner’ Serenade, with Isabelle Faust as guest star!

The Arcana label continues its successful collaboration with the Archi di Santa Cecilia, the Roman ensemble made up of members of the famous Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. The ensemble is led by Luigi Piovano, the orchestra's first cellist since 2007 and a regular partner of Sir Antonio Pappano on piano, his principal conductor; their recording of Brahms cello sonatas will be released this year. The Archi di Santa Cecilia offers us a new recording dedicated to Mozart: the famous serine Eine kleine Nachtmusik K525 and the lesser known but equally brilliant Divertimenti K136, K137 and K138.

The Kocian Quartet has earned the reputation as one of the foremost Czech string quartets of its time. Its repertory is broad, encompassing standards by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, as well as mainstream Czech works by Dvorák, Smetana, Janácek, and Martinu, and little-known fare by Pavel Haas and Hans Krása. But it has also introduced many new works by an array of contemporary Czech composers, including Tichy, Loudova, Kaslik, Kubicka, Riedelbauch, and conductor/composer Rafael Kubelik. Neuer Blickwinkel Sigiswald Kuijken präsentiert mit La Petite Bande erneut eine Einspielung, die dank fundierter Recherche einen neuen Blick auf scheinbar altbekannte Musik bietet: Er führt diese Werke nämlich in einer reinen Quartett-Besetzung (zwei Violinen, Viola und Kontrabass) auf. Für Kuijken vermittelt diese Ausführung viel eher die lebendige, direkte Essenz dieser Musik als ein Kammerorchester. Mit dem Menuett KV 601 Nr. 3 bietet er zudem einen adäquaten Ersatz für den früh verlorengegangenen zweiten Satz der Serenade. Obwohl fünfzehn Jahre früher entstanden ergänzen die Divertimenti KV 136-138 hinsichtlich Besetzung, Leichtigkeit und Eingängigkeit Mozarts Eine kleine Nachtmusik von 1787 wunderbar.
