In a live setting at the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, Hary is joined by a dazzling array of musicians who perfectly complement his style, allowing the music to successfully venture all over the world map. Harry Manx built a career putting a unique spin on the blues, serving up his distinctive and hypnotic brew of Eastern and Western sounds to audiences worldwide. Combining the sensuality of traditional blues with transcendent Eastern sounds has become his trademark. It’s in a live setting that this bridge between “heavenly” India and “earthy” American blues is most effectively built. As Harry says, “My goal has always been to draw the audience as deep as possible into the music.”
An exciting album the UK's Queen of the blues, Zoe Schwarz and the Commotions. Featuring her vocals alongside the great guitarist, Rob Koral, with Pete Whittaker on Hammond and Paul Robinson on drums and percussion. “Blue Commotion is a breath of fresh air on a contemporary music scene too often dominated by image, the bottom line and the need for an instant hook. They refresh the blues genre with mostly self penned material, hugely original arrangements, virtuosic playing and, of course, Zoe Schwarz’s majestic vocal sweep and interpretive ability.‘This Is the Life I Choose’ proudly confirms them as an independent band who stand proudly above the cut and thrust of the ‘music biz’ and pursue their muse with real vitality and passion. They rock, they groove, they swing, they jam, and always make an essential meaningful connection with their free spirited approach. Some people call it blues, the band would probably settle for just damn fine music!”
A mix of new interviews with old footage and recordings, this documentary, narrated by Danny Glover, highlights legendary Mississippi blues guitarist-singer Robert Johnson (1911-38). Kevin Moore (who records as Keb Mo) appears as Johnson in narrated reenactment sequences, and producer Don Law is portrayed by Don Law Jr. With both color and black-and-white footage, the film traces the brief but extremely influential career of this near-mythic figure, generally regarded as the king of the Delta blues. Shown at the 1997 Boston Film Festival.
The new solo album from Rob Reed (Magenta/Cyan/Sanctuary), the follow-up to the successful Sanctuary series. Again, Rob has collaborated with Tubular Bells producer Tom Newman and multi-instrumentalist Les Penning on the album, along with drummer Simon Phillips and multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley. The Ringmaster albums will be released in two parts, with the second instalment coming in early 2022.
It seems odd that Salvation Blues is Mark Olson's first true solo recording. After his tenure with the Jayhawks, Olson left the band to spend more time in Joshua Tree with his then-wife, fellow singer/songwriter Victoria Williams. Olson released a quartet of recordings with the Original Harmony Ridge Creekdippers (aka the Creekdippers), always with Williams either sharing the billing or in the band. Olson and Williams divorced in February of 2006, and he lost the home he built in Joshua Tree as a result. He took off on a solo tour of Europe where the sketches for a number of the songs on Salvation Blues were written.
