Awsten Knight is not a man to be missed or ignored. Never mind his predilection for brightly coloured hair, he is a prolific tweeter, engaging his large international fanbase with emotional honesty in his role as lead singer, lyricist and frontman of the Texas band Waterparks. Behind the bright and breezy facade however, there is a serious musician responsible for some of the catchiest anthems to emerge from the pop-punk scene in recent years. Entertainment, their second album, arrives shortly after Knight admitted in a brutally honest manner that he thought of it as “ruined” due to an undisclosed event in his personal life. Given that much of Entertainment describes being madly in love, it’s safe to guess what happened. However, with themes of obsession and hints at depression, it is more than just a sappy tribute to young love. Beneath the vibrant surface colours, there is a darker centre lying at its core.

This Is The Kit, long a favorite of US musicians like The National, Sharon Van Etten, and Chris Thile, is poised to break through to a larger fanbase beyond the music intelligentsia with the warm, inviting, and beautifully human Moonshine Freeze. The band, led by Paris-by-way-of-Bristol vocalist and songwriter Kate Stables along with the core trio of Rozi Plain, Jamie Whitby-Coles, and Neil Smith, as well as a revolving cast of horn players, additional percussionists, strings, and others, worked with producer John Parish on Moonshine Freeze.

Blues musician Ryan Perry announces the release of his solo debut, High Risk, Low Reward, via Ruf Records March 13, 2020.
We first met Ryan Perry as a teenage phenomenon, when he hijacked 2007’s International Blues Challenge in Memphis with his Homemade Jamz Blues Band, and announced his talent for sharp storytelling, stinging guitar and soulful vocals. This charismatic bandleader’s talents have only grown over the last decade, and following 2020’s solo debut on Ruf Records, Ryan is the finished article, armed with a setlist to raise the roof. And she does it in a truly wonderful way… Talking about Simone Kopmajer means talking about one of the most internationally successful contemporary jazz musicians from Austria. Not many in her métier can claim to have played concerts across the planet. There aren’t many stages in Europe the 15-year veteran from Styria hasn’t stood upon. Her expressive and sensitive voice has graced 11 albums and she performed for a loyal fanbase on tours in the US, Japan and Southeast Asia.

Late last year, Jenn Grant was on stage at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary with Blue Rodeo, crooning the band’s classic concert closer Lost Together. She delivered the despondent second verse in a torch-singer’s manner: “I stand before this faceless crowd and I wonder why I bother, so much controlled by so few …”
