Guitarist Jens-Uwe Popp and mandolinist Jochen Roß began their musical collaboration in 1997. Since then, they have taken a musical journey from Scottish folklore to works of the 20th century, and they remain fascinated by the new soundscapes these styles offer their instruments. For this album, they have put together a selection of pieces that capture the essence and spirit of their work together - their shared curiosity and open-minded approach to music from different styles and time periods. Only three takes of each piece were recorded in order to capture the most spontaneous and unique moments of their musical dialogue.

Antonio Soler is best known for his many keyboard sonatas. His training as a church musician and a post as organist at the royal palace and monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial brought him into contact with musicians such as Domenico Scarlatti from the court of Philip II. With the Op. 4 sonatas the influence of Scarlatti mixes with new styles emerging from Vienna. Soler’s Classical forms include lively dances to go along with elegant delicacy, solemnity and drama – all enhanced by his characteristic sparkling ornamentation and virtuoso technique.

The illustrious Scarlatti family was famed throughout Europe for forging new musical developments. Alessandro was responsible for creating a new operatic school in Naples whilst his son Domenico devised a huge sequence of single-movement keyboard sonatas that have proved indispensable to pianists. Composed for the Spanish court, and specifically for his pupil, the Infanta Maria Barbara, the sonatas here derive from manuscripts preserved in Venice. Their virtuosity is matched by ceaseless invention in which Scarlatti sometimes evokes Iberian popular dances, all generously endowed with melodic interest and brilliance.

Alessandro Scarlatti was largely responsible for developing early Neapolitan opera but his son Domenico journeyed to Lisbon and then to Madrid where he entered the service of the royal family. It was primarily for the Infanta Maria Barbara, who became Queen of Spain in 1746, that Domenico Scarlatti wrote his celebrated single-movement sonatas, some of the greatest pieces in eighteenth-century keyboard repertoire. This volume reveals Scarlattis evocations of Spanish dance rhythms, vivid exploration of colour, scintillating scales and arpeggios and striking echo effects.
