Geffen Records seems to have intended a straightforward "best of" compilation containing the singles released from Neil Young's five albums with the label between 1982 and 1987. Then Young himself became involved, and his version of a Geffen sampler naturally turned out to be more unusual…

This is an incredible collection of Neil Young's work. It includes several songs that were previously unreleased.

* "Down to the Wire" is an outtake from Buffalo Springfield Again. It features piano from Dr. John (Mac Rebennack).
* "Winterlong" was recorded during the On The Beach sessions.
* "Deep Forbidden Lake" is from the sessions for Homegrown, one of Neil's unreleased albums.
* "Love Is A Rose" is a song with the same melody as "Dance Dance Dance", a song by Neil given to Crazy Horse for their 1971 album. Linda Ronstadt later recorded "Love Is A Rose".
* "Campaigner" was written during the Stills-Young Band tour in 1976. Promo versions of Decade featured a version of "Campaigner" with a verse that was removed for the retail copies.

Decade also had several rarities…

After Neil Young left the California folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation. Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic…

An iconoclast with a large, loyal audience and a long, very successful career, Neil Young has explored a impressive range of styles – from acoustic introspection and wistful country rock to blistering hard rock, electronic experimentation, blues, rockabilly, and heartfelt polemics – while sounding entirely like Neil Young at all times, with his engagingly craggy voice, his flinty sincerity, and unique gifts as a songwriter. Young's creative restlessness is a comfortable match for his prolific nature, and he's not averse to dropping his current fascinations for something else on the drop of a dime, which frustrates some fans but also helps keep his music fresh and full of ideas. Even when he's in relatively familiar musical territory (his electric music with Crazy Horse, his rootsy semi-acoustic work, the intimacy of his solo performances, his thematic albums focusing on life experiences and his take on the world around him), there's a spark of unpredictability that fuels his muse and keeps him in the present day despite a career spanning over seven decades.
