Nektar are a band that has to be caught live to be fully appreciated. This is a live recording of the band in its prime from 1974 in a city where they always seem to play at their best, New York. It is also the band in its original line-up with Roye Albrighton on guitar and vocals, Ron Howden on drums, Mo Moore on bass and vocals with Taff Freeman on Hammond organ and vocals. The band is young and hot, its chemistry obvious as its technical prowess and hooks.

Nektar live were always an experience, they had massive success in such a context, taking their prog sound into an arena where the light show covering the band with psychedelic motives brought their concept pieces to life.

The problem with progressive rock artists recording live albums lies in the fact that the same feeling of wonderment, musical vastness, and escapism mustered on their studio releases is difficult to capture on-stage. Half of this dilemma plagues Nektar's Live in New York release recorded in 1977, while the rest of the album's disappointments stem from the group's removal of their early-'70s progressive sound altogether. The nine cuts that make up Live in New York fail to show the true essence of their progressive beginnings, with the songs embellishing more of a straight-ahead rock & roll style. Gone are the long keyboard wanderings, the abstract guitar trips that spiral into the rest of the musical interplay, and the fantastic ambience that was once formed by the music's overall trippiness…

Nektar, formed in Germany by four Englishmen, never stormed the charts during prog-rock's brief early-'70s heyday, but they created their own distinctive sounds with early work that conjured images of floating through outer space, including chunky guitar chords, doom-laden organ, and phased vocals suggesting a cold and lonely trip through vast cosmos (a parallel but harder-rocking universe to Saucerful of Secrets-era Pink Floyd). There was also a change in direction during the mid-'70s, featuring crisper production as well as pop lyrics and choruses, deemphasizing the abstract, spacy elements that initially made Nektar's music distinctive.

For fans of Nektar, Van Der Graaf Generator and Progressive Rock! Formed in Germany in 1969, Nektar favored extended compositions and concept albums over the constraints of pop. They were among the progenitors of the progressive rock movement of the 1970s as well as the jam-band scene that arose in the late1990s. Their sound travelled well to the States, where they enjoyed Top 40 success with “A Tab in the Ocean” (1972) and “Remember the Future” (1973). Nearly 20 albums and a half-century later, the band’s artistic and personal charisma has earned them masses of devoted fans along with their latest album “The Other Side” (2020) which was Number 1 on Amazon Progressive Music.
