LP contains the original 5 tracks - CD/Digital include an additional 3 bonus tracks . Remastered by Grammy? winner Michael Graves, with vinyl cut by Jeff Powell Producer John Snyder had always wanted to record Pepper and booked him into a week at the Village Vanguard in New York. At the time, Pepper was under contract to Contemporary Records and label head, Les Koenig, decided he would record the gigs, quashing any notion Snyder had of doing the same. However, Art promised Snyder that he'd record an album for Snyder's label, Artists House, at some point down the road. Together they wound up making four. Here again on vinyl, CD & Digital are the original albums drawn from these sessions, lovingly recreated in their original form, remastered by Grammy? winner Michael Graves and recut by Jeff Powell.

With her sleek bob haircut (usually with a flower placed just so), vintage fashion sense, strikingly beautiful looks and artfully customized ukulele, Janet Klein might seem at first to be a simple novelty act, a 21st-century hipster "ironically" recreating the subtly naughty looks of a fin-de-siecle French postcard. Then she opens her mouth to sing. There's no Betty Boop hiccups or Mae West-style brassiness in her charmingly original voice. And when she starts to play her ukulele, it's clear that this oft-ridiculed cousin of the guitar is neither prop nor gimmick, but a delightful and under-utilized musical instrument. Bearing an ever-expanding repertoire of, as she puts it, "obscure, lovely and naughty songs from the 1910's , 20's and 30's," Janet Klein is a musical archeologist hiding in the body of an F. Scott Fitzgerald heroine.

Cécile McLorin Salvant’s ascension cannot be slowed. WomanChild, the New York-based singer’s first album on Mack Avenue Records and second release overall, was nominated for a 2014 Grammy Award for best jazz vocal album; her next release, For One to Love, took home the 2016 Grammy in the same category.
Following up her Grammy win, McLorin Salvant release her third album on Mack Avenue Records, called Dreams and Daggers, a double set of discs mainly recorded live with her band over three nights at the Village Vanguard — the venerable Greenwich Village jazz club. A handful of tracks in the collection of 23 were later recorded in studio with a string quartet.

Genre: Classical / Label: ATMA Classique

ATMA Classique is delighted to present a selection of mélodies for voice and piano of Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924). This recording marks the first time the songs will be heard in their original keys and voice types, according to the composer’s indications for their first performances. Faure’s mélodies are performed by four Canadian singers who bring distinct vocal qualities to their interpretations: Hélène Guilmette, soprano; Julie Boulianne, mezzo-soprano; Antonio Figueroa, tenor; and Marc Boucher, baritone. Pianist Olivier Godin accompanies the singers on an 1859 Erard piano tuned to 435 Hz, the pitch standard established in France by ministerial decree in 1859. The piano belongs to the Arte Musica Foundation at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and is known for its exceptional workmanship and unique sound.

Magdalena Kožená is a remarkable singer. Her voice is a somewhat light mezzo with many colors, and she can shade it to a whisper or impress with a fortissimo high B-flat. Her range is absolutely even from top to bottom and she never switches gears; similarly she refuses to push the voice at either end. Her reading of Eboli's "Veil Song" from Verdi's Don Carlos is seductive and insinuating, with just the right Spanish flavor in the low-register roulades–but they're soft-focused. Perhaps she has no "chest" register, or is afraid to use it?

There is something for everyone in this collection of Isabelle Aboulker’s most beautiful melodies, released in Aboulker’s 80th birth year and sung here by soprano Julia Kogan. The passionate vocalises of Je t’aime sit alongside limpid fables by La Fontaine (The Crow and the Fox, The Lion in Old Age and more), while the unnerving eeriness of the merchant of souls in Au Marche de Saint-Paul contrasts with the light humour of the Savoir-vivre cycle, and the melancholy accents of Lettre d’amour make way for the irresistible charm of L’Inconstante.

François-Adrien Boieldieu numbers among the most important exponents of the opéra comique of the French imperial era and the subsequent restoration. With La dame blanche (1825) he even produced one of the internationally most successful works of this genre; it served as a model example for other composers and played a significant role in the further development of the opéra comique. François Boieldieu received his early training in music in particular from Charles Broches, the organist at the Rouen Cathedral. In 1796 he went to Paris, where he met Cherubini. From 1803 to 1811 he was the court music director in St. Petersburg, and in 1817 he became a professor of composition at the Paris Conservatory.

Let us first salute the title, given by the publisher, and undoubtedly also by Jean-Paul Ricard and Jean Buzelin, co-responsible for this edition: Jazz Ladies, and not Women in Jazz as in the past, or even “girls » as was also the case. Not the “women” of jazz, a term that is used everywhere, but the “ladies”. We do say “ladies and gentlemen” after all. This time, the ladies are entitled to three CDs, one more than usual. The tenacity of Jean-Paul Ricard, a great specialist on the subject for years, collector of records and CDs, therefore produces its effect, and it is with pleasure and a certain amazement that we see the list of instrumentalists lengthening female who has practiced jazz. And again, the usual rights reasons limited the selection to the year 1962. We suspect that if we could go to the present day, we would need a good dozen cakes. Because, even if the figures do not seem to indicate a break in the famous “glass ceiling”, the presence of “ladies” is not weakening, and is even strengthening. Let us add that female singers are not included in this selection, except obviously the cases (not rare at all) of instrumentalists whom the producers pushed into singing, for financial reasons.
