Le cinéma égyptien d'avant 1970 a joué un rôle clé dans l'émergence de talents de la chanson arabe, laissant ainsi quelques grandes bandes originales.Longtemps, jusqu’à la fin des années 1970 et l’arrivée des productions made in Bollywood, le cinéma égyptien était le plus puissant du monde non occidental. Et très rapidement, à partir de 1934 – et de la sortie du film Al Warda al Baïda (« la rose blanche ») et de sa BO, signée Mohamed Abdel Wahab –, la bande-son a joué un grand rôle dans son succès. Plus grand même que les scénarios sur fond de bluette sentimentale mélodramatique, selon la critique de cinéma Nadia Meflah.

This production of Dialogues originated at the Netherlands Opera, staged by the brilliant minimalist director Robert Carsen. Onstage action is often hieratic, quite appropriately so, and is particularly effective in the final scene – where the nuns go one after the other to their death by guillotine – which is staged differently than I've ever seen it. I won't ruin it by saying more than that; you must see it for yourself. Stage design is minimalist, with only monochromatic backdrops, spare furniture and props downstage, and Wieland Wagner-like lighting, stunningly effective. Costumes by Falk Bauer are primarily in black and white except for the splashes of color in the clothes of the Marquis and the Chevalier. The mob is entirely in black, the nuns in typical black-and-white until the very end.

From the near-fusion energy of 2012's Signing—the long overdue studio followup to the Joe Locke / Geoffrey Keezer group's incendiary Live in Seattle (Origin, 2006)—to the expansive beauty of his 2013 quartet collaboration with Lincoln, Nebraska's Symphony Orchestra on Wish Upon a Star and, just a few months later the same year, an exploration of two musical forms that have been of seminal importance to the vibraphonist, Lay Down My Heart -Blues & Ballads Vol 1, Locke has been afforded virtual carte blanche to look forward and, perhaps for the first time in his career, plan out a series of recordings that demonstrate the depth and breadth of a vibraphonist who has, slowly but surely, emerged as one of the finest—if not the finest—of his generation.

When Gabriel Fauré was a boy, Berlioz had just written La damnation de Faust and Henry David Thoreau was writing Walden. By the time of his death, Stravinsky had written The Rite of Spring and World War I had ended in the devastation of Europe. In this dramatic period in history, Fauré strove to bring together the best of traditional and progressive music and, in the process, created some of the most exquisite works in the French repertoire. He was one of the most advanced figures in French musical circles and influenced a generation of composers world-wide.

"TranceMatch" is a well mixed release and it contains a number of very impressive tracks, an enjoyable ride through the best side of the trance sound around the beginning of the new millenium.
