I first saw Jay in person at a Michael Franks concert i'd paid to attend . I was underwhelmed . Looking back , it's clear to me that Mike's concert was not quite "jazz" enough for my loving . Don't get me wrong , i love Michael but let's face it , he's more Steely Dan than "jazz jazz" . Some time later , i bought this recording by Mr. Azzolina (at a bargain basement price) and was like "really" ? Jay is a wonderful jazz guitar player . Allmusic is correct , this session is very "tasty" . Looking at the musician listing upon buying the disc , i knew good things where before me.

Career retrospective from Pub Rock’s angriest man Graham Parker, spread over 6 CDs with a DVD featuring a live set at the Brook Southampton from last year’s final tour with the Rumour…LTW’s Ian Canty looks at 40 years of Camberley’s very own Punk Soul brother….. It wasn’t very promising on the face of it. A resentful 25 year old garage pump attendant with a run through the 60s from Mod to Hippy behind him and a headful of dreams about Van Morrison and Dr Feelgood, matched up with what might have been the cream of the Pub Rock scene. But this was after all of their respective bands had singularly failed to make an impact, so together, in 1976, they stood at the doors of the Last Chance saloon. What wasn’t expected was that with their musical power allied to the petrol pump punk’s lyrical smarts and alarming stage presence, they would blow the doors off the hinges. Ladies and gentleman, I give you Graham Parker and the Rumour.

Swing one word really describes this new recording by John Colianni, his fourth for Patuxent. Swing, the style of jazz exemplified by Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Swing, that essential, almost indescribable, element of jazz that Ellington described as “ that part of rhythm that causes a bouncing, buoyant terpsichorean urge.” The music on this album swings because it is performed by musicians who are steeped in the tradition of how to swing. John Colianni has certainly lived a life immersed in swing from the time his parents took him to see Duke Ellington perform at Georgetown University in 1974 and he managed to get back stage and have Duke sign his copy of Music Is My Mistress. His early influences were Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson, Oscar Peterson, George Shearing and Count Basie.

In the U.S., few music listeners have any awareness of the British skiffle phenomenon of the late '50s, and the only performer from this era to enjoy any kind of profile in America is Lonnie Donegan, whose "Rock Island Line" charted here. Other notable skiffle acts, such as Johnny Duncan (not the '70s country star), the Vipers Skiffle Group, and the Chas McDevitt Skiffle Group are unknown except to an elite few. The genre itself was basically an attempt to replicate American folk music in Britain by playing American folk and blues songs in an affectedly rural-sounding manner, and the result often sounded something like a strummy, energetic cousin of bluegrass coupled with the instrumental sound of Elvis' Sun sessions.

Lefty Frizzell was the definitive honky tonk singer, the vocalist that set the style for generations of vocalists that followed him. Frizzell smoothed out the rough edges of honky tonk by singing longer, flowing phrases essentially, he made honky tonk more acceptable for the mainstream without losing its gritty, bar-room roots. In the process, he changed the way country vocalists sang forever. From George Jones, Merle Haggard, and Willie Nelson to George Strait, John Anderson, Randy Travis, and Keith Whitley, hundreds of artists have emulated and expanded Lefty's innovations. Frizzell's singing became the foundation of how hard country should be sung.
