Retro funk enthusiasts Weekend Sun have teased us with a string of sizzling singles and the like, but it's taken until now for their debut long player, Forever Tomorrow, to drop. It's a colourful affair heavily indebted to the kind of sample-heavy 90s hip-hop that blended 1960s soul, funk and even hip jazz. However, despite the hip-hop influences, this collective of northeast musicians are all about classic songwriting dressed with vintage soul stylings, and this they do very well. Standouts here include the lushly forlorn "Love Remains" and the broken-soul-beat of "Lies".

I think y’all are going to dig this one. It’s what Prince was going for on the Madhouse joints, but we leaned closer to Funk and Soul — with a flare of New Orleans, of course. It’s like Leon Ware and Marvin Gaye – I Want You meets the vamps of The Meters and the cues of The Ohio Players, with a touch of Herbie Hancock and Patrice Rushen thrown in, and a dash of Jay Dee. But it don’t sound like none of that shit at the same time.

The formation of Peacock Records in late 1949 dates back to an event nearly three years earlier when a young guitarist called Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown saw his chance to grab the spotlight - and took it with both hands! 'Gate' had never been backward in coming forward. When legendary bluesman T-Bone Walker fell ill in mid-performance, he leapt up, picked up the guitar left on the stage and started playing his own 'Gatemouth Boogie'. 15 minutes later a star was born. The owner of the club, Don Robey, ensured the young upstart put his autograph on a management contact. Robey would eventually found Peacock Records to release his music, and that's where the label's history starts.

The dirty blond hair is the same, the body posture is also the same, and there are touches in the voice that have a similar genetic connection, but Devon Allman has toiled long and hard to establish his own musical identity, separate from his mega-famous dad, Gregg Allman. In fact, Allman, who was raised by his mom (Shelly, not Cher) in Texas, took up the guitar on his own, and did not meet his father until he was 15 years old. "I was 15, and I sent him a really short letter saying, 'Hey, it's me. Here's where I'm at. I'm playing guitar." I got a phone call three days later," says Allman.

Mingo Fishtrap is the name of the band and with regard to their new album, On Time, it’s both good and interesting. It’s a big, old 12-song bellyful of Memphis soul crosshatched with New Orleans jazz and funk (with not a little bit of All-American jam band thrown in for spice, good measure and maybe a nod to those “jammy” people over at Schmuckers). Jazz purists will scoff – there are no Braxtonian charades or Powellian accoutrements here – but people who believe jazz and dancing should co-exist, like back in the days of Ellington, will certainly abide with Mingo.

Leonard Cohen's Popular Problems is an uncharacteristically quick follow-up to 2012's Old Ideas. That record, cut in the aftermath of a multi-year tour, revitalized him as a recording artist. Producer Patrick Leonard (Madonna, Bryan Ferry) serves as co-writer on all but one tune on Popular Problems. While Cohen's sound has revolved around keyboards since 1988's I'm Your Man, Leonard gets that the real power in the songwriter's lyrics are best relayed through his own own simple melodies. Everything here – keys, female backing chorus, acoustic instrumentation, etc. – is in their service. As always, Cohen's songs – delivered in his deepest earth rasp – offer protagonists who are ambivalent spiritual seekers, lusty, commitment-phobic lovers, and jaded, untrusting/untrustworthy world citizens.

Label: Direct Hit Records | Release Year: 2014

Nancy Wright’s new album Putting Down Roots effortlessly blends blues, R&B, funk, New Orleans and gospel styles in a fresh, creative collection of twelve original compositions, intertwined by strong, tasteful arrangements and performances. Wright’s naturally bluesy voice conveys charm and conviction, giving her a very honest, unaffected sound all her own, which is nothing short of refreshing. If comparisons of her vocal stylings must be made, they would be to Ruth Brown and Dinah Washington. Her lyric writing gives the listener a peek into the twists and turns of a woman’s romantic life, while her instrumental work seduces us to party.
