Review by Timothy Monger
As the '70s came to a close, an emerging crew of female rock artists and bandleaders began to populate the airwaves. From the punk attitude of the Patti Smith Group and Chrissie Hynde's Pretenders to all-female guitar bands like the Go-Go's and the Bangles, these bold artists set out to ensure that women would no longer be marginalized or under-represented in the rock industry. She Rocks: The '80s Wave of Women Rockers collects 15 cuts from some of the '80s most inspiring women. Trailblazing singers with a unique style like Cyndi Lauper and Kirsty MacColl are featured here alongside bands led by strong frontwomen like the B-52s and 'Til Tuesday. These women set the stage for both equality and the high quality of women rockers who would follow their example in the coming decades.

New Musik's debut album, From A to B, is one of the best - and most influential - electronic LPs of the '80s. Its keyboards may sound dated, but there's a freshness to these charming, unpretentious songs that hasn't been spoiled by technological advances in computerized instrumentation. Many new wave revivalists have attempted to capture the nerdy vocals and quirky synthesized bleeps of From A to B and failed. This record is a product of its time, recorded when keyboards were viewed as eventually replacing guitar and bass as rock & roll tools. While many synth pop groups became mired in existential woe to show that they had emotions underneath the layers of Casio hiccups, New Musik is having a blast on From A to B. "With robot precision/We're gonna be doin' just fine," sings Tony Mansfield (guitars, keyboards, vocals) with geek sincerity on the exhilarating "Straight Lines"…

For Fans Of: The Cure, DIIV, Echo & the Bunnymen. Hometown (1985): Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. SUSAN SLEEPWALKING is a journey through dreamlike landscapes at dusk — a romance for insomniacs and night owls. The haunting debut by midwestern indie rock duo The Arms of Someone New sees a 40th anniversary re-release in a deluxe 3-part remastered edition. Originally available on vinyl in 1985 on the band’s Office Records label, SUSAN SLEEPWALKING established itself as a spellbinding moody masterpiece, blending alternative college-rock textures with ethereal post-punk and gloomy dream pop. The album includes a 24-track second disc of never-before-heard material including alternate versions and demos as well as bonus tracks from the group’s 1985 EP BURYING THE CARNIVAL and rare selections from the 1984 HOLY DANCE 7-inch. The third part is a new album, SUSAN DREAMING, a dramatic reprocessing of the album’s 10 tracks reimagined by band members Steve Jones and Mel Eberle as an atmospheric electronic experiment: a hazy, dreamy, sonic landscape.

Rising from the ashes of the legendary British post-punk unit Joy Division, New Order triumphed over tragedy to emerge as one of the most acclaimed bands of the 1980s; embracing the electronic textures and disco rhythms of the underground club culture many years in advance of its contemporaries, the group's pioneering fusion of new wave aesthetics and dance music successfully bridged the gap between the two worlds, creating a distinctively thoughtful and oblique brand of synth pop appealing equally to the mind, body, and soul.

ARELY HEARD 1982 BROADCAST FROM AN EARLY US FURS SHOW Already a popular act in London and New York City when this remarkable show by The Psychedelic Furs was both performed, and indeed recorded for live transmission by the King Biscuit Flower Hour in late 1982, the gig came about a year after the band broke through in the US. With Richard and Tim Butler as the core members of the band, Richard's undeniable stage charisma is one factor in what made The Psychedelic Furs such a remarkable live band. The group was making its way into the American music mainstream with songs like "Love My Way," "Sister Europe," and "Into You Like a Train," all performed here with high impact, having formed in the UK in 1977 with Richard and his brother bassist. They soon added the rest of the band and started making a splash on the then thriving UK new wave/post punk club circuit.
