For the sessions in New York though, instead of an orchestra or ready-made arrangements accompanying Monro, they chose the songs and did all the arrangements as they went along – head arrangements, as they are known. The band was made up of just five musicians - a pianist, bassist, drummer and two guitarists, who both played a mixture of electric and acoustic guitars. The majority of the recordings made over the week were from relatively new musicals, many running in Broadway theatres at the time of the recording, aside from "Stranger In Paradise," which dated from the early 1950s. Seeing as Monro was there, musical director Dave Cavanaugh took the opportunity to lay down a couple of tracks written by Richard Ahlert for possible single release, which had no Broadway show connections.

The 1967 New York Sessions are comprised of the (much compiled) recordings Van Morrison made for Bang! after his split from Them. Teaming with Brill Building vet producer Bert Berns, Morrison's wild-eyed lyricism is often a tight fit with Berns' straight-ahead commercial sound (see the silly but fun "Chick-a-Boom" for an example). Still, a number of great songs can be found here, including the all-time great "Brown Eyed Girl," "The Back Room," "He Ain't Give You None," and "Ro Ro Rosey." Early versions of tracks from Astral Weeks, "T.B. Sheets" and "Madame George," also appear. Despite Van's objections to being a pop artist, the conflict between the two styles makes for some very interesting and invigorating listening. These sessions aren't vital to the casual Morrison fan, but anyone whose love of the man goes beyond the hits needs to add these to their collection.

On first thought, one might be hard-pressed to find a common ground between Algerian raï music and Latin jazz. But for the pianist Maurice el Medioni, an Algerian-born Jew who left his home for France decades ago as an exile, and the Cuban-born, New York-based percussionist Roberto Rodriguez, the link connecting North Africa and Cuba is a direct one – by way of Spanish Andalusia. World music fusion exercises are more common all the time, and cultural distinctions often become so blurred that the sources are obscured rather than accented.

Lisa Hilton has surrounded herself with an all-star supporting cast, so The New York Sessions looks promising on the surface. But the pianist is not a particularly distinctive improviser, sounding more like a middle-of-the-road performer rather than a jazz player on far too many of the selections. Her originals often tend to border on new age, while the jazzier selections are arranged so conservatively that her fellow musicians (including alto saxophonist Steve Wilson, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Lewis Nash) aren't really properly showcased. Two bland interpretations of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" don't help matters at all. Even proven vehicles like "Emily" and "Epistrophy" are disappointing in her hands. One last note: it pays to proofread a CD before issuing it, as there is no excuse for misspelling the names of composers Johnny Mandel and Thelonious Monk. – Review by Ken Dryden, AMG.

'Setting Standards' brings together three classic albums 'Standards Vol. 1', 'Standards Vol. 2' and 'Changes.' Recordings made at the beginning of Keith Jarrett's "Standards" project with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette in a sustained burst of creativity in New York in 1983. ECM is re-releasing them in a specially-priced 3-CD box set - which is itself setting standards as the first in a new ECM reissue series - to celebrate the trio's 25th anniversary this month. In January 1983 Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette came together with producer Manfred Eicher for a recording session at New York's Power Station. The idea - revolutionary in an era when the idea of playing original material was all-important - was to simply make an album of jazz standards.

Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang cut different figures. Joe was combative, a joker and man about town. Eddie was quiet, considerate and careful with money. They were born in Philadephia - Eddie in 1902, Joe in 1903 - to Italian immigrant parents. Both studied the violin. Their partnership began in their mid teens when Eddie joined Joe's newly-formed band as a guitarist. Soon they were performing as a duo. Eddie made the early running. In 1919 he joined Charlie Kerr's Orchestra as a violinist, switching to banjo.
