Nick Lowe's 1998 album Dig My Mood marked the second masterpiece of his "worldly balladeer" and "elder statesman of rock and roll" chapter of his career, leaving the ironic power popper persona of his Jesus of Cool days far behind. Following 1994's critically-acclaimed The Impossible Bird, Lowe found himself writing about love and hardship through a sophisticated lens, including celebrated staples of the Nick Lowe canon such as "You Inspire Me" and "Man That I've Become," both fixtures of Nick's setlists a quarter-century later. Featuring Lowe's razorsharp songwriting and a selection of tasteful covers that Nick breathes new life into (Henry McCullough's "Failed Christian" and Ivory Joe Hunter's "Cold Grey Light of Dawn''), Dig My Mood is another masterclass example of Lowe's strength as a composer and performer.

SUPERB BROADCAST RECORDING FROM NICK LOWE & HIS COWBOY OUTFIT A pivotal figure in power pop and new wave, and formerly of pub rock, Nick Lowe s string of well-reviewed solo albums and classic singles, released since the late 1970s, have seen the great man achieve the status of legend. Alongside his vocal prowess, Lowe plays a mean bass guitar, piano and harmonica. Best known for the songs Cruel to Be Kind and I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass (a top 10 UK hit), as a member of Dave Edmonds Rockpile, and his production work for Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, and others, Lowe also wrote (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding , a hit for Costello. By 1984, Lowe released his fifth solo-album, Nick Lowe & Hs Cowboy Outfit, on which he was backed by his new band of the same name. The Cowboy Outfit included Paul Carrack (formerly of Squeeze, and before that one-hit-wonders, Ace), Martin Belmont (previously with Graham Parker s Rumour), Billy Bremner from Rockpile, and Bobby Irwin - Van Morrison s one-time percussionist - on drums. Lowe and his band went out on the road shortly after the release of.

While “Cowboy Outfit” has a slightly different meaning as UK Slang, Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit marks a turn towards a more rootsy persona for our hero. Anchored by the international number one “Half a Boy and Half a Man”, the album introduces a tex-mex/roller-rink organ sound, although the lineup of Bobby Irwin, Paul Carrack, Martin Belmont and Lowe is essentially unchanged. Newly discovered Johnny Horton covers “Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor” and “Walk on By” (included here as bonus tracks) show that there may have been a more twangy intention to the record– but as it is full on rockers like “Maureen” and Mickey Jupp’s “You’ll Never Get Me Up (in One of Those)” rub shoulders with pop like Dusty Springfield’s “Breakaway” and Nick’s own “L.A.F.S.” (featuring the TKO Horns who had recently punched up arranger Elvis Costello’s own “Everyday I Write the Book”).

Collaborations between John Hiatt and Nick Lowe began long before Lowe contributed to Hiatt’s Bring The Family album in 1987, and participated - alongside Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner - in the short-lived super-group Little Village. Indeed, Lowe produced, played bass and provided backing vocals for the second side of Hiatt’s 1983 album Riding With The King. Lowe’s then touring and studio band The Cowboy Outfit were bought in to back Hiatt, and it just so happened that the legendary (even by then) Paul Carrack was a member of the mighty Outfit and thus played his inimitable keyboards on the album too. But that’s not all; when it was time for John Hiatt to take his new record on the road, he didn’t hog the limelight; instead, he invited Lowe and Carrack along, gave them equal billing to himself, and all three got a hand in formulating the set lists; each of the trio featured songs of their own - or ones with which they were notably connected.
