The Ultra Vivid Lament’ is the 14th studio album from Manic Street Preachers. It is both reflection and reaction; a record that gazes in isolation across a cluttered room, fogged by often painful memories, to focus on an open window framing a gleaming vista of land melting into sea and endless sky.

It is both reflection and reaction; a record that gazes in isolation across a cluttered room, fogged by often painful memories, to focus on an open window framing a gleaming vista of land melting into sea and endless sky. Musically, ‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’ is inspired by a formative years record box (ABBA, post-Eno Roxy, the Bunnymen, Fables-era REM, Lodger) though the end result could only be the unique union of James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire and Sean Moore, collectively one of the UK’s most consistently brilliant rock’n’roll bands for over three decades.

Manic Street Preachers have released details of their fifteenth studio album and UK tour to accompany it. ‘Critical Thinking’ is released on Columbia on 14th February 2025, and a new single featuring for the first time, lead vocals from bassist/lyricist Nicky Wire ‘Hiding In Plain Sight’ is available now (25th October). Initially inspired by a line from the poet Anne Sexton ("I am a collection of dismantled almosts"), ‘Hiding in Plain Sight’ contrasts a fearful midlife nostalgia - one in which the writer longs to “keep the curtains drawn all day” - with a gloriously uplifting melody that draws on classic ’70s rock’n’roll of The Only Ones, Cockney Rebel and the loose flow of Dinosaur Jr’s ‘Freak Scene’. Recorded at the band’s Door To The River Studio and Rockfield, Monmouth, the song features a lead vocal by Nicky Wire and added vocals by Lana McDonagh. It was produced by the band with regular collaborators Dave Eringa and Loz Williams and mixed by Caesar Edmunds (St Vincent/Wet Leg).

Nearly 40 years in, the Manics are turning back the clock to the arty alt-pop of the 1980s—and also playing at reinvention. Bassist Nicky Wire takes lead vocals on several songs for the first time, and it doesn't at all feel like a concession to keep a band member happy. Wire's voice is more barbed and ominous-sounding than James Dean Bradfield's, and so are his lyrics. "The pinnacle of despair/ The apex of denial/ The skyscrapers of untruth/ Customized feeds/ Net neutrality/ Smart meters/ Smart order/ Smart fucking railways/ Body positivity/ Believe in yourself/ Imposter syndrome/ Fuck that!" Wire growls on the hard-charging title track, bemoaning how online culture pays lip service to wellness and self-care even as it fuels a desire to tear one another down.

Since Sarah Cracknell was busy being the voice of Saint Etienne, it's hard to blame her too much for taking almost two decades to deliver her second solo album. After giving Red Kite a spin though, it's good enough that it's easy to wish that she had done it sooner. Unlike her 1997 album Lipslide, this time out Cracknell takes a giant step away from the patented Saint Etienne sound, surrounding her whisper-soft vocals with chamber pop, country-rock, and folk trappings (i.e., lots of guitars) while capturing the same sepia-toned nostalgic melancholy so much of their work has…

Months after the release of the harrowing The Holy Bible, Manic Street Preachers guitarist Richey James disappeared, leaving no trace of his whereabouts or his well-being. Ultimately, the remaining trio decided to carry on, releasing their fourth album, Everything Must Go, in 1996. Considering the tragic circumstances that surrounded it, Everything Must Go is the strongest, most focused, and certainly the most optimistic album the Manics ever released. Five of the songs feature lyrics Richey left behind before his disappearance, and while offering no motivation for his actions, they do hint at the depths of his despair.
