Whether to categorize Motion as a jazz or electronica album is an intriguing conundrum, because it truly turns out to be a combination of both musical forms, and it is an unequivocally brilliant combination, at that. British arranger/programmer J. Swinscoe - who virtually is the Cinematic Orchestra - gathered samples of drum grooves, basslines, and melodies from various recordings and artists that have inspired and influenced him (spaghetti-western composer Ennio Morricone and Roy Budd's spy film scores, '60s and '70s jazz and soundtrack scores from musicians such as Elvin Jones, Eric Dolphy, Andre Previn, David Rose, and John Morris). He then presented the samples that he had collected to a group of musicians, the core of which consisted of Tom Chant (soprano sax, electric and acoustic piano), Jamie Coleman (trumpet, flugelhorn), Phil France (bass), and T. Daniel Howard (drums), to learn and then improvise…

Bobby McFerrin is heard in prime form throughout this date, which was the follow-up to his classic The Voice. A few of the numbers are taken unaccompanied, and these include memorable renditions of "Thinkin' About Your Body," "I Hear Music," and "Mañana Iguana." Pianist Herbie Hancock duets with McFerrin on "Turtle Shoes"; "Another Night in Tunisia" (taken from the Manhattan Transfer's Vocalese album) features McFerrin with the vocal quartet and Jon Hendricks; soprano saxophonist Wayne Shorter interacts with the vocalist on "Walkin'"; and an eccentric "Beverly Hills Blues" has "assistance" from comedian Robin Williams. A continually intriguing release with plenty of wit from the innovative singer.

Although this anthology is named after Bobby McFerrin's one chart hit, 1988's feel-good novelty song "Don't Worry, Be Happy," it provides a much broader overview of this exceptional vocal talent. One of the most unique jazz singers of all time, McFerrin moves beyond simple scatting into a sometimes otherworldly set of vocal sounds. Five live tracks include a pair of duets with Chick Corea on the duo's own "Even For Me" and the Thelonious Monk standard "Round Midnight," as well as a playful audience participation piece called "I Love Music." Another highlight is 1985's "Another Night In Tunisia," a collaboration on the Dizzy Gillespie classic with earlier vocal jazz master Jon Hendricks and the vocalese group Manhattan Transfer.
