The easiest approach would be saying you can't think of anything you like about this album, you won't get bored. It's not entirely true; with a very short attention span you might judge this as incredibly crappy pop. It takes a few listens from a completely unprepared listener to understand this goes way beyond pop.

Nina Hagen Band - Unbehagen (1979) {Columbia}

This is one great album by the German rock diva, perhaps her best. It is more accessible than the debut, offers greater variety and some truly gripping songs. African Reggae is a powerful tour de force and by the way, a dancefloor classic, Wir Leben Immer Noch (Lene Lovich's Lucky Number) is a perfect pop song, and Wenn ich ein Junge war with its somewhat risque lyrics just about bursts with exuberance. Fall In Love mit Mir is another catchy number, but every track has its own charm. The great melodies and intelligent lyrics with enthusiastic playing by her band ensure the classic status of this album. In my opinion, this is her Opus Magnum. It demonstrates what can be achieved by integrating reggae rhythms into a rock format, while the rock songs remain top of the league. Her vocal gymnastics are less in evident than on the debut album, but her voice is still brilliantly utilised. An excellent, timeless classic!

KMFDM's final album starts out with a bitter goodbye on the title track, and the usual mechanical sonic assault continues on tracks like "Witness," the Kraftwerk-inspired "R.U.OK?," and "Full Worm Garden." Some songs are more club/dance than industrial; "Today" depicts a calmer eye before "Rubicon" and "Bereit" resume the high energy and aggressive stormy ambience that are the band's trademark. KMFDM sound smoother yet maintain their emotive mayhem in all its glory. ~Allmusic

MFSL Aluminium

By 1983 MoFi had grown into a company with over 25 employees and grossing over $8 million annually. Then they nearly lost it all. The new darling on the scene was the compact disc. Because MoFi had been putting something on the order of 20% of their earnings back into research, they were prepared for the next wave. In the mid ‘80s, they launched their assault on the CD market with their half-speed wares.

Their first efforts were released on aluminum discs, very much like all other discs at the time. And, in fact, some of these have become quite rare. Recently copies of them regularily go for >$75 on e-Bay. Partly, in an effort to justify the higher price they needed to charge, MoFi began to release their works on gold-plated compact discs called UltraDiscs. Although gold in and of itself isn’t significantly better than aluminum for the reproduction of ones and zeros, it oxidizes roughly ten times more slowly than aluminum. It is also supposed to coat more evenly than aluminum. This last attribute is said to cut down on the pin-holing so common to aluminum CDs, which allows for less error-correction during playback. This means more of the actual recording and less processor interpolation gets to your ears. So there was some inherent advantage to the gold treatment.

Berlin 61 / 89 / Wall Of Sound is not an ordinary compilation. It is closer to a concept album, referring both to a chapterin history and a musical assemblage which resounds like a continental echo to Phil Spector? s Wall of Sound.
Dangerous, sublime, incandescent, fuelled by a vivid mythology in which Nick Cave, David Bowie, Lou Reed, and Brian Eno meet, Berlin is an artistic city par excellence, a place of all extremes. During those three decades marked by the Wall, in which she was a world metropolis because American and French as much as German, Russian and English, Berlin established herself as the capital of an « other rock », as important and everlasting as the one which was born in the middle of the previous century, somewhere in the south of the U.S.A.
