To Be Free: The Nina Simone Story is a 3 CD Career Retrospective (1957-1993) including her work for Bethlehem, Colpix, Philips, RCA, CTI and Elektra, PLUS a DVD featuring the 1970 Emmy-nominated never-before-released documentary. This package includes 54 songs, 8 previously unreleased tracks, including some never recorded elsewhere. The box includes all chart hits (U.S. and U.K.) and her most famous signature songs. An added bonus are liner notes which include track-by-track commentary from Simone biographer, David Nathan, and introduction by Ed Ward, NPR's "rock & roll historian", and never-before-seen photos from her family archives, recording sessions and performances.

Eunice Kathleen Waymon's beautiful, mellifluous voice is one of the most distinctive and celebrated in music. As Nina Simone she recorded over forty albums during a long and distinguished career that stretched over five decades. Nina recorded for Philips from 1964-1966. This "best of" contains 10 songs that made up the original U.S. LP release of this collection, plus the additional tracks "Ne Me Quitte Pas" and "The Other Woman", both songs which are closely associated with Nina.

While there's some good music on this 73-minute CD, it could in no qualify as the essential Nina Simone. It's a patchy quilt of songs from the 1950s to the 1980s, reaching as far back as late-'50s sessions from early in her career, and stretching through several subsequent decades, including two songs from a 1985 album with clumsy glossy modern production, and seven songs from her In Concert album thrown in along the way.

The Nina Simone entry in Universal Music's discount-priced best-of series 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection draws nine tracks from Simone's popular Philips Records albums of the mid-'60s, plus two tracks from her live album Let It Be Me, released by Verve Records in 1987. Several of Simone's most frequent concert selections and signature songs are included, among them a live take of "I Loves You Porgy," "Mississippi Goddam," "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," and "The Other Woman." With a running time under 40 minutes and limited to only two of the labels for which Simone recorded, this is hardly a comprehensive compilation of her work. But it is a reasonable sampler at a reasonable price.

A fiery interpreter of the usually staid American songbook, Nina Simone took a song and made it her own whether it was Gershwin's "I Loves You, Porgy" or Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit." This 1994 collection on Universal features selections from her Philips years of the mid-'60s, generally acknowledged as the pinnacle of her recording career, the genesis of material including "My Baby Just Cares for Me," "Ne Me Quitte Pas (If You Go Away)," and her own "Mississippi Goddam." Feeling Good: The Very Best of Nina Simone doesn't have any surprises, but it's a good collection for beginners.
