Prince Naresuan is now the crown prince of Ayutthaya and the king of Burma is dead. While the new Burmese king is waging war, the crown prince plots to assassinate Naresuan. Hearing this, the prince decides to evacuate Thais out of the Burmese capital and declare that Siam will no longer bow to Burma. The war for the kingdom's independence begins.

It is 1986 in Iran. Undercover French journalist Freidoune Sahebjam (Caviezel) is traveling though a small southwestern village when his car breaks down. Surrounded by strife, he has little choice other to wait until his car is repaired and is soon approached by persistent local Zahra (Aghdashloo), who convinces him to follow her into the courtyard behind her home. There, she reveals to him that she has just bore witness to a most heinous crime - the stoning of an innocent woman who refused to divorce her husband so he could marry a younger girl. To get his way the husband accused his wife of adultery and, in order to ensure that she had no chance of defending herself, blackmailed several male villagers to testify on his behalf. A tribunal was quickly called, and her fate forever sealed.

Based on a centuries old tale with roots in real events, Chikamatsu Monogatari [A Tale From Chikamatsu, aka The Crucified Lovers] tells the hauntingly tragic story of a forbidden love affair between a merchant’s wife, Osan (Kyoko Kagawa), and her husband’s employee, Mohei (Kazuo Hasegawa), in an era when the punishment for adultery was crucifixion. When a series of innocent events lead to the false accusation of an affair between Osan and Mohei, the accused pair are forced to flee an almost certain death sentence. On the run, the outlaw couple grow closer together, drawn inexorably towards the romantic crime of which they are accused. In the hands of Mizoguchi, Chikamatsu Monogatari depicts two people caught up in a constricted world where true love and social obligation are at odds. His portrayal of the lovers’ dilemma lead famed director Akira Kurosawa to describe the film as “a great masterpiece that could only have been made by Mizoguchi.”
