The singer, composer and music copyist John Baldwin (ca.1560-1615) trained as a choirboy in the royal court chapel in England between 1580 and 1590 and was taught music theory and ensemble playing in conjunction with viol playing. Armed with this practical education, he performed a broad repertoire, encompassing church music, theatrical performances and evening entertainment for the feasts of wealthy citizens. He compiled the repertoire performed in this musical environment in his so-called Commonplace Book, with the aim of preserving the pieces contained therein for future generations. In the introductory poem to his manuscript he describes his book as "a store housse of treasure". The pieces transmitted are diverse, ranging from rhythmically sophisticated instrumental pieces over humorous songs to profound motets. This recording plumbs the depth of this musical treasure trove, bringing to life a fascinating era of English music history.

This new project is a Tribute to Erasmus (1466-1536), a Dutch Renaissance scholar, known as the 'Prince of the Humanists'. Using humanist techniques for working on texts, he prepared important new Latin and Greek editions of the New Testament and also wrote 'In Praise of Folly', 'Handbook of a Christian Knight' and many other works. Erasmus lived against the backdrop of the growing European religious Reformation; but while he was critical of the abuses within the Church and called for reform, he kept his distance from Luther and Melancthon and continued to recognise the authority of the Pope. His middle of the road approach disappointed and even angered scholars in both camps. Jordi Savall regards him as a model of wisdom and tolerance.

This is an enterprising programme of late-renaissance music selected from the choirbooks of the Hardenrath (otherwise known as Salvator) Chapel in Cologne. Three Flemish polyphonic masters are represented: Lassus, Philippe de Monte and Jean de Castro, the latter a composer I had not known until now.
