The Trial of Joan of Arc (1962)
A Film by Robert Bresson
DVD9 | ISO+MDS | PAL 16:9 | Cover | 01:01:21 | 7,89 Gb

Genre: Drama, Art-house | Artificial Eye #296 DVD

French cinema master Robert Bresson brings his trademark cinematic minimalism to this powerful re-telling of the story of Joan of Arc. Adapted from historical records of the trial and featuring a remarkable cast of non-professional actors, led by Florence Carrez in the title role, the film relays Joan's relentless interrogation and persecution by her captors in a direct, almost documentary-like manner. Bresson transforms Joan's oppression and human suffering into an unforgettabe testament to her purity and spiritual liberation. The final images of the charred remains of the stake are among the most horrifying and moving in all cinema.

This Rigoletto, filmed live at the Zurich Opera House in 2006, has three strong leads to recommend it. In the title role, Leo Nucci fully represents all of Rigoletto’s character traits and range of emotions—the hunchback’s lancing wit, fearfulness, and self-loathing when we first meet him and later, his obsessive need for revenge. Both Rigoletto’s sense of righteous triumph when he believes he’s got the Duke dead in the bag and his inconsolable grief at the drama’s end are palpable.

On Last Night, Moby is as blissfully out of touch with modern club music as he is current. As he explains (of course) in the album's liner notes, he has been in the thick of New York City club culture since the early '80s, and he takes the opportunity here to pay tribute to a number of dance music strains that have fallen in and out of fashion - in a couple cases, they've recently fallen back into fashion - including some angles he hasn't taken in well over a decade. The sturdiest, most appealing tracks tend to be where Moby breaks out with some highly energized combination of rollicking pianos, stabbing keyboards, and random divas, mixing and matching rave, Hi-NRG, and disco: "Everyday It's 1989," "Stars," and "Disco Lies" (featuring a vocalist who is nearly a dead ringer for a young Taylor Dayne) would've had no place on any of the last five Moby albums…

Hearkening back to the first releases from his own El Saturn record label in the 1950’s, where early Sun Ra records were typically printed in editions of 75 and featured hand-made or pasted-on sleeves, Kingdom of Discipline arrives in 2024 in a physical, hand-made edition of just 75 copies via Dead Currencies. "You've got a solo, John!" From the opening notes, where we’re dropped in the middle of a rehearsal at Saturn House on Morton Street in West Philadelphia, circa 1978, it’s clear that this is no stuffy jazz label offering. We hear Ra directing some of the legendary cast that would populate his Arkestra. Marshall Allen is on hand, as is John Gilmore. This is, essentially, “lo-fi” from one of the inventors of the genre later exemplified by punk rock and 90’s slacker indie-rock. It's a poetic symmetry for an artist who recorded to Sound Mirror wire tape machines in the 1940’s and self released home recordings before Daniel Johnston was even born. In some ways, Sun Ra has always been the bridge between jazz and punk rock’s DIY ethos. And not just because the MC5 opened for him in their heyday.

The Trouble with Harry (1955)
A Film by Alfred Hitchcock
DVD9 | VIDEO_TS | NTSC 16:9 | Cover + DVD Scan | 01:39:24 | 8,04 Gb

Alfred Hitchcock's painfully underrated black comedy The Trouble With Harry is a deliciously morbid film sure to amuse anyone with a slightly twisted or unorthodox sense of humor (such as Alfred Hitchcock's own). A dead body is found lying in the woods; what to do with him becomes the bothersome dilemma for a small group of the local residents. It was shot in the rich color of Vermont's autumn, the perfect compliment to its darker subject matter. Hitchcock has stated that the line quoted above is his favorite line from all his films.

Freak of Nature was an American Hard Rock band, formed in 1992 by former White Lion lead singer Mike Tramp. The band was formed after White Lion broke up and the follow up was significantly darker and harder than White Lion. The band released three albums and then disbanded in 1996. Following Freak of Nature, Mike Tramp released several solo albums and also reformed White Lion with a new line up.
