Soundtrack

Shortly after Le Professionnel (Georges Lautner, 1981), Ennio Morricone composes the score for another French film, Espion, lève-toi (1982), directed by Yves Boisset, with whom he already worked on L'Attentat (The French Conspiracy, 1972). Even if both films have common points, apart from the dialogue written by Michel Audiard (secret services, main character menaced and then crushed by the system, tragic end), it is not the case about the soundtrack. As often in Morricone's music, the tones are important and each instrument brings a peculiar color although perceivable over the orchestra, although in a coherent whole. Here the special atmosphere is played by the Oscar Valdambrini's flugelhorn (present in the three themes), the pianoforte, the bassoon, the percussion and the flutes.

This two-CD set collects most of Celine Dion's essential recordings from her pre-superstar years, when she was a very young French singer, popular in Canada and France. This set starts with the heavily synthesized Euro pop of the 1988 Eurovision contest winner "Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi," which was the song that introduced the singer to international audiences, and is something of a milestone in her career. Many of the songs on this set are fair, and differ from the processed teen pop of the late 1990s because of the ever-present sincerity in Dion's voice. Highlights include the elegant ballads "Tellement J'ai D'amour Pour Toi," "Benjamin," and "La Voix Du Bon Dieu"; the shimmering "Avec Toi" and "Du Soleil Au Coeur"; and the anthemic "C'est Pour Vivre."

French composer/conductor Paul Mauriat is a classically trained musician who decided to pursue a career in popular music. His first major success came in 1962, as a co-writer of the European hit "Chariot." In 1963, the song was given English lyrics, renamed "I Will Follow Him," and became a number one American hit for Little Peggy March. Mauriat is best remembered for his 1968 worldwide smash "Love Is Blue."

The late (and internationally revered) chanteur Joe Dassin culled a widespread following, at home in France and abroad, for his French folk and pop crooning throughout the 1970s, prior to his heart attack at the astonishingly young age of 42 in August 1980. The home video release JOE DASSIN: LIVE A L'OLYMPIA features Dassin's final live performance - at L'Olympia - circa 1977.

Unfortunately, Alan Shorter didn't get the chance to lead very many sessions. The limited commercial potential of his music – coupled with a rather unhealthy lifestyle – limited him to only a couple of titles under his own name and a dozen or so as a sideman. Like perhaps Eric Dolphy or Albert Ayler, though, the dates upon which he only played a supporting role still heavily bear his stylistic stamp. On this, the last of his leader dates, Shorter's compositions employ relatively vague stutter-step heads and then quickly dive right into free improvisation without looking back. What follows is free jazz along the lines of many BYG or ESP releases from the same era.
