Ever the sonic experimentalist, Mike Oldfield uses guitars exclusively (strummed, plucked, struck, sampled, etc.) to create every sound on Guitars. Perhaps an intentional response to the composer's previous assortment of electronic recordings, the album suffers from its form-over-substance concept…

For Islands, Mike Oldfield gathered a host of musicians to further his run of more mainstream-sounding albums. The album includes vocals by Bonnie Tyler, Kevin Ayers, and Max Bacon, as well as saxophonist Raphael Ravenscroft (famous for his work on Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street"), along with the album's producer and former Yes member Geoffrey Downes…

This album is simply exceptional. You get a hearty dose of a musical genius's compositional skills and vocabulary, but you don't come away feeling as though you were "taken to school"; the music is very accessible…

Although it features the beautiful recorder of Leslie Penny and the Chieftains' Paddy Maloney playing the uilean pipe, Ommadawn didn't gain Mike Oldfield the success he was looking for. The album was released in the same year as the David Bedford-arranged Orchestral Tubular Bells and nine months after Oldfield picked up a Grammy award for the original Tubular Bells album…

After a two-year pause following the release of Boxed, Mike Oldfield returned with a new epic project, this one spread over four vinyl sides and devoted to Native American themes rather than hewing once more toward the Celtic end of the spectrum. Included was Oldfield's musical adaptation of "The Song of Hiawatha," grandiose but empty; there was a nice sense of the dramatic when it came to dynamic range, but no sense of time – the piece ran far too long as Oldfield searched for enough musical ideas to prop the whole thing up. After this, Oldfield avoided album-length concepts for quite some time.

Another underrated work, characterized by a lot of interesting keyboards and his usual talent as well… sometimes closer to such classic "Light Prog". In other circumstances it's more in the vein of such Ambient/Acoustic New Age, but always filtered through his versatility and huge important music experience, in the course of his long career.

Label: Rocket Music | Release Year: 2017

Well-known and successful composer Terry Oldfield has recorded a new project, "Sky dancer", fruit of last year's work. In the same, it has collaborated hand in hand with the Spanish Carlos Garo, composer and Spanish guitarist. Both, thanks to the new technologies have managed to unite Australia and Spain through the universal sounds that are expressed in the subjects of the new disc. The collaboration was forged during the European tour Terry Oldfield & Soraya Saraswati during 2016. Both played in an intimate and wonderful event in the Galileo room and in other cities like Toledo and Valladolid. In these performances, the chemistry was magical and so this new work brings together the poise and consistency of the Terry music with the thrust and new melodies of Carlos Garo.
