La súbita erupción del Vesubio del 24 de agosto del año 79 sepultó en lava las poblaciones de Pompeya, Herculano, Estabia y Oplontis, en el golfo de Nápoles. Unas excavaciones pusieron al descubierto en 1750 los restos de una esplendorosa villa a las afueras de Herculano. En su interior se hallaron mil ochocientos rollos de papiro semicarbonizados, la mayoría de los cuales contienen textos filosóficos griegos, especialmente de Epicuro y sus discípulos. Se trata de la única biblioteca de la Antigüedad que ha llegado hasta nuestros días.
