Since the "Love Songs" type of compilation has become so common (especially in the run-up to Valentine's Day), it's worth noting that this one, dedicated to the Monument Records recordings of Roy Orbison from the first half of the 1960s, is a cut above the usual. True, it's a discount-priced release running only about the length of an old LP (36-plus minutes). But compilation producer Nick Shaffran has made a good choice of Orbison hits with romantic themes (eschewing rockers like "Oh, Pretty Woman"), including nine of the singer's 19 Top 40 hits for Monument, along with five good B-sides and LP tracks such as Orbison covers of "Love Hurts" and "All You Have to Do Is Dream."

Quickly joining the first wave of rockabilly, the American singer-songwriter Roy Orbison (born in Texas in 1935) joined The Sun Records stable in 1956, joining several names that remained like him in The Legend of the original White rock & roll, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis or Johnny Cash. Nicknamed Big O because of its powerful and sweet voice at the same time, Orbison delivered his first Classic in 1956 with the title "Ooby Dooby", followed by his first classic, "Only The Lonely", and hits like "Love Hurts", "Crying" or "In Dreams". In 1964, he signed "Oh, Pretty Woman" which became one of the most reissued singles of all time and went through several commercial lives.

Although he shared the same rockabilly roots as Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison went on to pioneer an entirely different brand of country/pop-based rock & roll in the early '60s. What he lacked in charisma and photogenic looks, Orbison made up for in spades with his quavering operatic voice and melodramatic narratives of unrequited love and yearning. In the process, he established rock & roll archetypes of the underdog and the hopelessly romantic loser.

This is a truly, bizarre two-fer package that combines Roy Orbison's early hit album Crying with the soundtrack to the TV Special Black & White Night. The only conceivable reason is, perhaps, that on the latter recording, Orbison re-recorded the title track and "Candy Man." They were included on the special as a career-spanning look at his collection of smashes played by an all-star cast of musicians including Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, and k.d. lang. Weird.
